Treviglas Business and Enterprise College is one secondary school that’s taken a creative look at how it can best use its facilities. The College, based in Newquay, has run a unique surf academy for seven years already, offering university
modules in surfi ng for the over 16s. The modules prepare participants for a surf-related degree or employment in the surf industry.
The College is now branching out further and two of the teachers at Treviglas are undergoing accredited
trainee assessor qualifi cations. This means Treviglas can then become a registered training assessment centre and coach teachers throughout the country to become surf instructors. The school will offer the rlSS Beach lifeguard qualifi cation at a discounted rate for education professionals only, therefore purposely avoiding undercutting local commercial operators. This qualifi cation means that teachers can then go away and legally take their pupils out on to the beach and coach them in surfi ng. Treviglas will become the fi rst accredited centre in a secondary school to offer these awards. Thomas Wilson, assistant head at Treviglas said: “We’re always trying to be creative and innovative; not just in our teaching style but in the way that we make things happen from an organisational perspective as much as pedagogical one.” He added: “Where possible schools need to be enterprising and they have many fantastic physical resources they can use. all schools and colleges need to be thinking about how best to provide funds and be creative about that. We can’t expect that pots of money will appear because that’s not always the case. Through these surf qualifi cations, we can create a funding stream that offers real local and national benefi ts to the community and it enhances our curriculum. “We don’t know where it will take us how much money it will generate but who knows? You just can’t tell. it’s quite exciting.”
