Vision 2010: Candidates make final push

by Miriam Van Scott

Election season is in full swing, and SanTan Sun area voters are already casting ballots for local, state and national representatives, weighing in on statewide propositions and deciding whether or not Chandler should continue its alternative budget system known as Home Rule. Early voting has been underway since Oct. 7 for thousands of local residents who prefer mailing it in to waiting in line, while others are still considering the candidates and issues before going to the polls Nov. 2.

“About a third of Chandler voters are on the permanent early voting list, so ballots are automatically mailed out to them,” says Chandler City Clerk Marla

Paddock. “Everyone on the list should have received a ballot by now, and if they haven’t, they should contact our offi ce to let us know as soon as possible.” Paddock encourages voters to visit www.chandleraz. gov/elections to resolve any questions about deadlines, locations, propositions and initiatives, voter eligibility and other pertinent information before Election Day. “Ballots must be received no later than 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in order to be counted,” Paddock notes. “And polling places may have changed since the August election. Voters can confi rm their poll location by accessing the polling place locator on our website.”

Cyclist crosses continent for clean water by K. M. Lang

Early last summer, Karl Feller placed the rear wheel of his bicycle into the Pacifi c Ocean with 16 strangers and near-strangers. Eight weeks and 3,172 miles later, the Gilbert resident and his 16 good friends immersed the front wheels of those same bikes into the Atlantic Ocean knowing they had raised enough money to allow 100,000 of the world’s poorest residents access to clean water for a year.

Making the world a better place has always been important to Feller, who, before he took his current position as chaplain at Chandler’s East Valley Hospice, served as junior high youth pastor at Southern Chandler’s Desert Springs Church, where he still volunteers.

Minimal delays during HOV construction

FAST LANES: New HOV lanes on Santan Loop 202 Freeway are on a fast-track construction timeline.

by Ann N. Videan, APR SanTan Sun drivers should experience few traffi c-

fl ow issues on the Santan Loop 202 Freeway through Southern Chandler during the year-long construction of new high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes between the Interstate 10 and Gilbert Road exits. “We shifted existing lanes to the right to accommodate the work zone in the median, so drivers will not experience a reduction of lanes. The only impact is reduced street shoulder width,” explains Lars Jacoby, public information offi cer with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). “There will be some closures when the project is wrapping up, for restriping and other fi nishing touches,” adds Eric Anderson, transportation director with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG). Initial construction activity began Sept. 10 east of the Loop 101. In this design-build project, ADOT will simultaneously direct the project designer and construction fi rms, Pulice Construction and Granite Construction, in an accelerated effort to complete the job.

Area drivers can expect faster travel times and more

effi cient freeway transitions by the end of 2011. The $85 million construction project will result in a total of eight lanes across the freeway, with three existing general-purpose lanes and one new HOV lane in each direction.

It will also provide direct HOV ramp connections to both Loop 101 and I-10, much like the HOV lanes on Interstate 60 move traffi c along separate ramps to and from I-10.

“HOV lanes provide a choice for travelers and time savings if they carpool. Transit [buses] will also use the HOV lanes to provide faster travel times. And, everyone can use HOV lanes during non-rush hour periods,” says Anderson.
