Flu season is just around the corner, and to help families avoid illness, Sunrise Pediatrics and Catholic Healthcare West clinics offer immunization shots. Flu shots are especially important for pregnant women, those ages 50 and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions or who live in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities, children younger than 5, healthcare workers and household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the fl u including household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months old. A free fl u shot clinic is available for all area residents ages 4 and older at Catholic Healthcare West’s Urgent Care center at 7205 S. Power Rd. in Queen Creek. The shots are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., Oct. 16; hours are subject to change due to supply. For more information, visit

year. Also, this year we will be featuring a Gingerbread House Workshop that will be an event for the whole family to participate in with their child.” Chef Kathy advises that these special workshops
fi ll up quickly. Another class that sells out early month after month is the KinderCooks. Designed for children ages 3 to 5, this program is more than just cooking. Paced for the preschool attention span, it offers recipes, age-appropriate culinary skills, basic nutrition, literature and movement during a little more than an hour session.
“Our Senior Chef class for students 12 to 16 has really taken off in the past few months,” says Sheehan. “We signed on so many new members that we had to open up another weekly class in that age group.” The Academy also hosts Girl and Boy Scout cooking merit badge sessions and celebration parties, handling everything from invites to beverages to T-shirt party favors. Children can make their own personal pizzas while celebrating the special day.
Serious students can enroll in the MasterChef program to participate in classes throughout the
month, complete a monthly quiz and earn patches toward a MasterChef’s jacket and diploma. There are complimentary Try-It classes every Monday. Join the Chef’s Club to receive a full menu of discounts, freebies and special offers.

Golfers learn ways to improve their games at a free golf clinic sponsored by Warren and Hagensen Wealth Management and held at the Ocotillo Golf Resort starting on Fri., Oct. 22.
The workshop begins at 8 a.m. with breakfast pastries and coffee at Bernard’s restaurant, with an intro by partner John Hagensen. At 8:20, Kay Jeanquartier, Ocotillo Golf Resort’s director of instruction, discusses common physical and mental mistakes golfers make, appropriate shot preparation and techniques with a question and answer session. At 8:45, the clinic moves to the putting green as Jeanquartier gives physical instruction.
Golfers are asked to bring their own golf clubs. The event is free, but space is limited and RSVPs are required by calling 480-782-1034.

Dr. Dallin Birch is originally from southeastern Idaho and came to the Phoenix area in 1998. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychol- ogy from Arizona State University.

Birch graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, and then received post- graduate training in endodontics, CEREC and Invisalign. He is an artist by nature and is very meticu- lous as he strives to deliver the highest quality dental care. Dr. Birch is known for being very compassionate and tries to give every patient the most comfortable experience possible.
