Young Chefs cook up by Joan Westlake

A cornucopia of Halloween and holiday cooking fun is simmering at Young Chefs Academy of Chandler. In its second year, the school offers classes and programs geared toward teaching youth ages 3 to 18 that cooking can be artistic, creative and fun.

“Oktoberfest is a big favorite,” says Kathy Sheehan, known to her young clientele as Chef Kathy. “Our Haunting Halloween workshop is a blast and sold out last year. The kids and the instructors all come in costume.”

Oktoberfest is from 5 to 8 p.m. Fri., Oct. 22, and the Haunting Halloween workshop is 1 to 4 p.m. Sun., Oct. 31. In addition to weekly classes in three age groups, there are special workshops from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday evenings. “We will have lots of fun ones around the Christmas holidays. Last year, we did Christmas cookies around the world, Winter Break Camp Can-I-Cook, along with a brunch where we had Santa come to our facility. The kids cooked him breakfast and had their photos taken with him. We will most defi nitely be doing that again this

FALL FUN: Children will don creative costumes for a ghoulishly good time at Chandler’s Halloween Spooktacular on Oct. 29.

Young people from toddlers to teens can try games like pumpkin bowling, scary piñatas, cupcake walks and more. There will be souvenir photos with a special spooky guest and a haunted house for a frightening tour through a custom-made maze with a scare behind every corner.

Children can enjoy pumpkin painting, face painting and a goblin and ghoul egg hunt. They can also create a picture frame, color a giant picture or make delicious “dirt cups” with pudding and gummy worms.

Every participant receives candy at each game station, so bring a trick-or-treat bag. In addition, snacks and treats will be available from the Chandler Lions Club for a small fee.

Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and enter the costume contest, which selects winners in various age groups and in the following categories: Best Family / Group, Scariest, Best Superhero, Best Cartoon Character and Best Princess. In the event of inclement weather, the festivities will be held next door inside the Community Center.

The Halloween Spooktacular is presented by the Chandler Recreation Division, with support from the Chandler Lions Club. For information, call the City’s Special Event Hotline at 480-782-2735 or visit www.chandleraz.gov/special-events.
