AN INTRODUCTION F TO AMERICAN LAW

OR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

For foreign-trained lawyers and legal scholars who have an interest in advanced study in the United States, the LL.M. Program at Southwestern provides an engaging and practical introduction to U.S. lawand American legal practice.

Southwestern faculty welcome international students and bring their own global perspectives; among them are many leading scholars in Latin American, Asian and international law who have taught in programs around the world. Dean Bryant Garth, who has published widely on the legal profession and the rule of law in numerous countries, is directly involved in mentoring international LL.M. students and developing course materials and specialized workshops.

International students will both benefit from and contribute to the rich diversity within the Southwestern community that reflects a broad spectrum of backgrounds, more than 30 foreign languages spoken, and student organizations representing a great variety of cultures and professional interests. Networking opportunities with alumni and other members of the bench and bar also enhance LL.M. students’ exposure to a wide range of perspectives.

International students are required to take the course Introduction to American Law, Legal Process and Institutions, and are encouraged to enroll in a practical study skills course designed for foreign LL.M. students. A special LL.M. administrator is dedicated toworking on an individual basis with students to help them become acclimated to Los Angeles and the law school. Services are designed to help students with all aspects of their Southwestern experience, from academic counseling to personalized academic support through the Student Resource Center to arrangements for local cultural and recreational activities.
