A1 Lighting offers an update on the lighting controls market and the impact of the new Part L regs on this sector.

controls being more feature-heavy, and at the same time less expensive, will create opportunities never before seen. The challenge for manufacturers will be to ensure that they can keep up with demand for equipment that is easy to install, cost-effective and quick to programme.’ Lutron’s HomeWorks control system has been installed throughout an apartment in Kensington. Previously two apartments now joined together as one, it was decided to bring light into the darkest area of the space. Simon Williams, managing director of custom installation company, Olive AV, who was responsible for the implementation of the lighting scheme,

explains: ‘A primary concern of the owner was how to achieve a range of lighting moods, whatever the time of day or night, whilst prioritising ease of use. With this in mind, we used HomeWorks to control all of the fluorescent dimmable ballasts and all of the window treatments. In addition, we made the most of HomeWorks’ sophisticated conditional logic to programme in multiple lighting scenes and window blinds functions which could be operated through custom specified SeeTouch keypads in every room.’ The functionality that HomeWorks

offers was vital to the success of this project. ‘The owner wanted to be able to create a variety of lighting moods

throughout the apartment, but not be alienated by the technology,’ explains Williams. ‘Through conditional logic programming and the HomeWorks astronomic clock, the owner of the property has a lighting system that intuitively adjusts the timing of various ‘sunset’ and ‘sunrise’ scenes throughout the year, without them having to do

‘In the past, advanced lighting control systems have been the premise of high-end homes, but as technology and product ranges advance, home owners with smaller budgets are increasingly realising the potential benefits that flexible light control provides.’ Diederik de Stoppelaar, vice president of Sales Europe and Africa at Lutron
