Thinking smart about
transportation
Manufacturing & Logistics IT spoke with the company’s UK key account manager, Charlie Pesti, about the advantages the company’s smart transportation management solutions can offer shippers and carriers, and what the company considers to be its current core USPs.
W
hile the world was worrying about a possible ‘millennium bug’ a decade ago, five forward-thinking students were considering how the
transport assignment tasks of shippers and carriers could be managed in a more effective and cost efficient way. Their carefully thought-out ideas became a thesis, which then became the genus of a new company. Since then, Transporeon has been constantly developing its solutions offering to ensure modern shippers and carriers are as cost effective, efficient and environmentally responsible as possible. Many of Transporeon’s customers are market leaders in their own industries; companies such as Kronospan, ArcelorMittal, Siemens, for example. “A large number of our shipper-customers talk about enjoying cost savings of 5 to 10 per cent in their transport budget since implementing our products,” said Transporeon’s Charlie Pesti. “Shipping smart, that’s the solution. Fuel isn’t cheap and personnel within the shipper or carrier organisation don’t come free of charge; therefore these companies need to consider how they can best save costs and work more effectively together while also providing the best possible service to the end customer.”

US. The Transporeon team consists of logistic experts, SAP-consultants, industrial engineers, IT personnel and economic specialists – a level of expertise that has been assiduously built up over the past decade. Indeed, the company celebrated its tenth anniversary this summer. Pesti points out that Transporeon’s successful formula for providing high-level of transportation transparency is built on three core pillars. The ‘first pillar’ is its e-Logistics platform, which facilitates electronic transport assignment. A shipper assigns its loads to one or more of its carriers. If the shipper assigns the load to only one carrier this is based on a pre-agreed pricing arrangement. If the company sends out the load to part of its own closed carrier group, carriers who are interested in this load can place a bid using the Transporeon system. After comparing the different offers, the shipper can assign the load to one of the carriers. This could be the most cost effective carrier, but the shipper could also make the assignment decision based on other criteria; for example service. Pesti observes an increasing number of shippers thinking strategically about their loads. “They often send out their loads at an early stage so that the carriers can optimise their planning,” he said. “Through this, carriers can frequently reduce the problem of empty miles.” >>
