Larry Pelland, Weirs Times contributing writer, escorts Mother Teresa to the stage at the University of Massachusetts on June 22, 1985, where she addressed the throngs of people in attendance that day. The recent commemorative stamp issuance by the U.S. Postal Service (see page 7) rekindled memories of that day for our writer.

A DAY WITH MOTHER TERESA

by Larry Pelland Contributing Writer

Flashback to June 22,

1985 as I attempt to get my arms around this spe- cial moment, wherein this humble woman, Mother Teresa, beloved and rec- ognized worldwide as, “The Saint of the Gutters,” brought to mind my mem- ories of spending a day at her side at the University

of Massachusetts stadium in Amherst, Massachu- setts, by invitation of the Newman Center, the Fa- tima Apostolate and the Apostolate of the Suffering and Handicapped, At eleven-twenty on that

memorable day, I watched the tiny figure of Mother Teresa come down the steps of a jet plane that had just landed at Westo- ver Air force Base. In that

moment, the months of planning, organizing and uncertainty I had experi- enced to bring her to West- ern Massachusetts faded into a brief but emotional introduction. “Mother, my name is Larry Pelland.” She replied, “Yes, Larry,

I know,” the Nobel Peace Prize winner grinned. She took my hands and squeezed them, and then she bowed in the tra-

ditional Indian manner before me. At that point I was overwhelmed and simply had to hug her. In the early afternoon,

the scene at Alumni Sta- dium in Amherst was moving and memorable. People of all ages, color and creed, including many disabled, waited patiently for the arrival of their honored guest. Acclaimed See PELLAND on 30
