Simplifying Qualifications Introducing the QCF (Qualification and Credit Framework)
In recent years there has been a huge drive on using qualifications to help employers improve their employees’ competence. Funded by Government Initiatives such as Train to Gain, NVQ’s have been central to this qualification environment, however, August 2010 will see the launch of the Qualifications and Credit Framework which will be an easier more flexible approach to qualifications.
The framework is a new way of recognising skills and qualifications. It does this by awarding credit for qualifications and units (small steps of learning) It will enable people to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes. The new framework will help present qualifications in a way that is easy to understand and measure.
Credit and Level Every unit and qualification in the framework will have a credit value (one credit represents 10 hours learning) and a level between “entry” and 8 (showing how difficult it is).
There are three sizes of qualifications in the QCF: Awards (between 1 and 12 credits)
Certificates (between 13-36 credits) Diplomas (37 credits or more).
Within the QCF you can have an award at level 1 or at level 8. This is because the qualification type (award, certificate, and diploma) represents the size of a qualification not how difficult it is.
Each qualification title contains the following: The level of the qualification ( “entry” to level 8) Details including the content of the qualification.
The size of the qualification (award, certificate, diploma)
Benefits for Employers The QCF will allow employers to devise flexible pathways for their employees which really meet their needs. It will allow qualifications to be built from building blocks to meet a changing environment.
Other benefits of the framework include: Easy to measure the level and size of achievements of prospective employees Describe levels of achievements in terms everyone can understand.
Make training options and pathways clear - helping employees and employers find the right training for their learning and business needs.
