With the HSE estimating around 4000 asbestos related cancer deaths in the UK each year, Scott Health & Safety has signalled a major tech- nological advance for mask mounted powered respirators with the launch of Phantom Vision. The new Phantom Vision will provide greater comfort and ease of operation for users in any application requiring powered or non- powered full facemask pro- tection, claims the company. Combining a new lithium- ion battery, long-life brushless motor and electronics technology with the already popular Vision full facemask, the new Phantom Vision is a power assisted respirator which can be used in a wide variety of demanding work-
place environments including asbestos removal and nuclear decommissioning.
With its motor mounted inside the facemask, Phantom Vision is said to significantly reduce the burden for the user and greatly simplify the decontamination process after use. Utilising the specialist features of the Vision facemask, the Phantom is available in three sizes offering high levels of comfort for the user and an unres- tricted (98%) field of view. The new design was
developed specifically to meet the requirements identified during extensive consultation with users and specifiers of existing PAPRs.

various mounting plates and brackets for the reflector prisms, allowing easy fixing and positioning of either a single- or 4-prism array to surfaces at almost any angle. Protective cages for the Fireray 5000 detector head and controller units are also available, in addition to those for the Fireray 50/100R and Fireray 2000 models.
Risk assessment guide is no flash in the pan
According to DuPont, the dangers of electric arc are often overlooked because most people are unsure how to assess and manage this hazard effectively. Following extensive research with independent experts, DuPont is to present its new Electric Arc Flash Risk Assessment Guide at the BRE Innovation Park in Watford, London on Tuesday 23rd November. The Guide will provide users with the tools to evaluatearc flash hazards at their facilities, and the knowledge to reduce the severity and consequences of an arc flash.

The Prism Plate for either 1 or 4 prisms is suitable for situations where the wall facing the detector head is perpendicular to the angle of the beam. Where this is not the case, the Prism Plate can be attached to a Universal Bracket that fixes to the wall, allowing the angle of the prisms to be adjusted to reflect the beam back correctly. The reinforced Surface Mount Plate is another option, providing a particularly rigid and secure fixing.
The Protective Cages are made from plastic-coated galvanised steel and will protect detector heads and controller units from accidental knocks. Ladders, forklifts and other moving equipment in a warehousing or industrial setting could easily catch one of the wall- mounted devices, and the cages will help prevent damage or misalignment that may occur.

Safety interlocks stand up to use in demanding application
Ideal Heating has upgraded safety procedures at its Hull site with the introduction of interlocking systems from Castell. The heating specialist has installed safety switches and access interlocks on ten machines in its foundry blowing area. The blowing area turns out sand-based moulds for casting heat exchangers used in the company’s boilers. Waste sand from the production process tended to clog up the previous safety system, but Castell’s heavy-duty KSE20 multi-key electrical switches and AI access interlocks have been unaffected by the
demanding environment.
