Crowcon achieves UVDB Verify B2 status
Draeger At Firex North
Leading gas detection specialist, Crowcon Detection Instruments, has achieved B2 supplier status under the Achilles UVDB Verify scheme for its health and safety, environmental and quality management systems.
UVDB (Utilities Vendor Database) Verify B2 status is the highest level achievable and confirms that robust quality systems are in place together with high standards in all areas of operations.
“This approval is just another example of how highly we rate safety and quality in everything we do,” comments Graham Franklin, Crowcon’s director of global sales. “Within Crowcon we have worked hard to develop a culture where all our people are committed to giving their very best and they take great pride in what they do. “While Verify B2 status reflects well on us, we are already working hard to gain more approvals, con- firming our commitment to remaining at the forefront of the gas detection sector.”

Research into understanding explosions
SCI is to project manage a joint industry research project to improve the
understanding of explosion mechanisms such as might have been at play in the
2005 Buncefield incident. The results of the study will to lead to the develop- ment of practical industry guidance on the propensity of various hydrocarbons to develop flammable vapour clouds and a better
understanding of explosion mechanisms when such clouds are ignited.

Featuring the latest in CCTV flame detectors, Draeger will be focussing on fixed gas detection systems and the use of infra-red (IR) sensor technology to reduce maintenance and calibration intervals at Firex North 27th- 28th October 2010, Manchester Central 1. Visitors to Stand B20 will also be able to find out more about Draeger’s solution to fire and gas detection integration. Using leading edge technology products that meet ATEX and other legislative requirements, Draeger’s high end systems fully integrate with existing plant and are designed to meet physical constraints as well as the operating budget. A significant development in flame detector technology, the Draeger Flame 5000 is certified as SIL 2 capable and is suitable for use as part of a functional safety system. Reliable and rugged, the colour imaging based CCTV flame detector is also explosion-proof. Designed as a standalone system housed in a single unit, it combines colour imaging with digital signal processing and software algorithms to process live video images and interpret the characteristics of a flame. Unlike traditional radiation, or combined radiation and CCTV flame detectors, the Flame 5000 uses the camera to detect the flame and, as a result, eliminates false alarms. Simple to install with a stainless steel
mounting bracket that can be rotated for optimum pos- itioning, it can detect fires of 0.1m2
a 90° horizontal field of view. Tel: 01670 561413

Helping to protect people at
www.hsmsearch.com Straightforward solutions
A recent report by the HSE estimates that around 8000 people die each year from Occupational Cancers. According to Castle Group, many of these are caused by encountering hazardous sub- stances at work and should therefore be preventable. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 provide legislation that must be complied with by all companies throughout the EU, but very often, to really deal with the problem means taking action over and above the requirements of the law. Castle Group has some straightforward solutions for companies that want to take steps to prevent people
becoming ill from exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace. These include training courses, sampling equipment and personal monitors.
Compliance expert and managing director of Castle Group, Simon Bull said:

All Level 2 Service Centres must have: • Staff who have attended and completed training at levels 1 and 2 at RAE Systems
Europe’s local office
• Calibrated equipment for repairs, service and calibration
• On site trained personnel
• Re-certificated training every two years.
• Service records retained for a period of 10 years

www.hsmsearch.com/enquiry WISH report
RoSPA has conducted an investigation into worker involvement in safety and health (WISH) in non- unionised workplaces in Scotland for the HSE. The initiative built on evidence that organisations with “properly involved” unionised safety represen- tatives achieved better health and safety performance. The investigation found the concept of worker involve- ment was low on the agendas of most employers and there was an unwillingness to invest in the issue. Despite this, most businesses interviewed by RoSPA involved workers in day-to-day activities, although often this was not thought of as “involvement”.
