The anti-smoking law that bans smoking in all indoor areas has pushed office smokers to take their cigarette breaks in the street, hence creating a new community known as the “Hot Pot Pack”. Jimmy (Shawn Yue), a mild mannered advertising executive in his twenties, befriends a misfit cosmet- ics salesgirl, Cherie (Miriam Yeung), who also likes to light up. An awkward romance soon blossoms amidst the anxiety of their nicotine rush. As they become more attached to each other, they also find themselves moving farther away from their regular “hot pot pack” into their own private alley.
From Pang Ho-cheung, he of such varied fare (and HIFF favorites) like YOU SHOOT, I SHOOT, A.V., and ISABELLE is considered the most prolific and exciting Hong Kong director working today. This smartly crafted dark comedy will definitely turn off anti-smoking advocates. As for smokers who feel shunned by society, this film is for them.

This film touches on the complex and twisted relationships between husband and wife, ex-couples and parents and children. Strange and awkward situations fueled by these difficult relationships make up this urban family dark comedy.
MA WEN’S BATTLE adapted from Chinese writer Ye Zhaoyan’s best-selling same-named novel, depicts the story of Ma Wen and his wife Yang Xin, who cannot reach an agreement on the distribution of their common property- -the house — after they get divorced. As a result, Ma has to share a small room with his ex-wife, their young son, and his ex-wife’s new lover. The four protagonists, struggling with the evolution of romantic relationships, have some clear-headed moments among their general confusion. Ma Wen, who feels useless and ordinary, wants to live a quiet life, yet must now endure the agonizing love battle caused by his housing problem.
