DIRECTOR: Julie Taymor sCREEnWRITER: Julie Taymor PRODUCERs: Julie Taymor CInEmaTOgRaPhER: Stuart Dryburgh CasT: Alfred Molina, Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Djimon Hounsou, Alan Cumming, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper

Renowned for her wonderfully inventive works for both stage and screen, Julie Taymor, the visionary director of TITUS, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, FRIDA and the mastermind behind the Broadway reimagining of Disney’s THE LION KING and the upcoming SPIDERMAN Musical, has applied her considerable talents to this fascinating rendering of Shakespeare’s late, great mystical romance. Exiled on a remote island, Prospera (the extraor- dinary Helen Mirren in a gender bending role), the duchess of Milan, conjures up a storm to lure a swath of characters from her past to her island kingdom, revealing in the process a cross-section of human frail- ties, illusions, kindness and nobility. Ms. Mirren is aided by a dream cast, including Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Tom Conti, Reeve Carney and Felicity Jones.

Shot primarily on the island of Lanai and the Big Island, THE TEMPEST maximizes the beauty and mystique of Hawaii’s scenery to paint an

otherworldly realm. Taymor has a reputation for directing visual feasts and surreal imagery, which fits perfectly in Shakespeare’s final and tragicomic play. Aside from using Hawaii as a mystical location, the film is another example of big budget and ambitious productions that are also funded by local investors, spearheaded by local production company Talk Story Productions. Aside from the master talent represented in front of and behind the screen, this film continues the tradition of Hawaii’s diverse film community, showcasing that we can compete and produce world-class filmed entertainment. With its premieres at the Venice and New York Film Festivals last month, HIFF is honored to bring home THE TEMPEST as its Centerpiece Gala. —Anderson Le
