GETTING REALLY INVOLVED

GETTING MORE FROM THE FESTIVAL (What’s the deal with Volunteering?)

Here are a few easy ways to tell if you should take the dive and become a HIFF Volunteer.

Volunteers can see films for free, just by working shifts at the festival. As a staff volunteer, for each shift you work* you get a voucher to any film**. You’ll also be invited to special volunteer appreciation screenings and events.

* After the first shift ** based on availability at the time you redeem the voucher

Volunteers get to work behind the scenes and see how the festival works. There are opportunities to meet filmmakers and guests, speak with members of the staff about the festival, and to attend special events. Furthermore, volunteers at HIFF come from all walks of life. In my time volunteering with HIFF, I’ve met students of all ages, Fan Club members and enthusiasts, people in the entertainment and hospitality industries, and independent film makers. Just having access to other volunteers can be one of the single greatest benefits of volunteering at HIFF

The festival is a huge operation that serves more than 70,000 film lovers a year. The only way that running it is even possible is because of dedicated work of the volunteers. The festival, quite literally, could not happen without them. Perhaps even more significantly, to the vast majority of the patrons of festival, volunteers are the face of the festival. As a volunteer you have the chance to change the experience from ‘just another movie’ to true community event.

VOLUNTEERING (I think I might want to volunteer, but...)

We’ve created 2 tiers of volunteers to accommodate a whole range of interest and commitment. We believe that everyone who loves watching films can contribute, so we want to make it as easy to volunteer as possible. For any questions about our system or about volunteering in general, please email our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@hiff.org

TIER 1 - Audience Volunteers: Volunteering can be as easy as showing up early for a film that you have already bought tickets for. For certain tasks, we will be recruiting volunteers from the audience of every show. These volunteers will help us with the operation for a single show and exchange, you’ll have a chance to reserve your seat. So if you’re curious, be sure to show up early.

TIER 2 - Volunteer Staff:

Staff volunteers have the most flexibility and are probably who you think of when you hear “HIFF volunteers”. As a Staff Volunteer, you have the option to work as many or as few shifts are you want. Staff Volunteer benefits include a HIFF Volunteer T-Shirt, meals access to a volunteer lounge, and ticket vouchers for the shifts you work. To find out more, visit our webpage www.hiff.org.
