DIRECTOR: Taika Waititi sCREEnWRITER: Taika Waititi PRODUCERs: Ainsley Gardiner, Cliff Curtis, Emanuel Michael CInEmaTOgRaPhER: Adam Clark CasT: Taika Waititi, James Rolleston, Te Aho Eketone-Whitu
Boy (first timer James Rolleston) lives with his Nan, his brother and his cousins in the rural New Zealand village of Waihau Bay, where he hangs out with his pet goat and obsesses about one day seeing a Michael Jackson concert. His father, Alamein (Taika Waititi, who also directs) is famous for many things including being a war hero and punching out the most people with one fist... at least... that’s who he is according to Boy’s vivid imagination. In reality, Boy has never really known his dad, since he’s spent most of Boy’s life either in prison or just not around. But that changes when Nan leaves town to attend a funeral and dad shows up with his gang of three.
In his follow up to EAGLE VS SHARK (HIFF 2008), director Taika Waititi serves up a heart-felt (if not heart warming) comedy about a boy looking for a father figure in a man who may not be fit to be a proper dad. Along the way there are plenty of laughs, but ultimately Waititi’s willingness to avoid convention in favor of honesty is what makes BOY a winner. —Chris Claxton

DIRECTOR: Katie Wolfe sCREEnWRITER: Witi Ihimaera PRODUCERs: Nicole Hoey CInEmaTOgRaPhER: Fred Renata CasT: Calvin Tuteao
This feature film adaptation of Witi Ihimaera’s iconic novel stars Calvin Tuteao as David, a successful businessman who inexplicably estranges himself from his wife (Nathalie Boltt) and children. David is having an affair with a young male actor and is torn between living that life or the one that he is expected to live by his immediate and extended family. Complicating matters is his family’s deep roots in the Maori culture, which disapproves of homosexuality. For a while, the family suspects that David is seeing a woman. But one night, the actor unexpectedly shows up at David’s family compound, where his mother (Vicky Haughton) catches the two in a passionate embrace. She immediately banishes David from the compound, leading him to reveal the truth to all who are important to him.
Katie Wolfe directs this film with a unique combination of sensitivity and honesty, showing us that, even if a man finds the courage to finally live life on his own terms, he must also find the courage to accept the consequences that follow. —Titus H.Y. Chong
