School News Soule

submitted by Soule School Fourth Grade Fourth-grade students at Soule School are off to a wonderful start for their new school year. We have been busy getting to know each other, our classroom routines, and our new schedules. Fourth graders have been reviewing good study habits and test-taking strategies. This helped prepare students for the NECAP test that began October 5. During the month of September, students have been busy learning. In math class, our focus has been geometry. Students have enjoyed creating their own geometric constructions with blocks, toothpicks, and compasses. We are reviewing the steps of how to be a good reader with our mini lessons during Readers’ Workshop. Please continue to encourage your child to read each night at home. As the month of October approaches, there is much to be excited about in fourth grade! Soule School will be hosting a “Grandparents and Special Friend Day” on October 26. We look forward to sharing some time during the school day with our special friends. In addition, we look forward to celebrating Halloween with class parties at 2 p.m. on October 29. We dare you to join us for the second annual Fourth Grade Wax Museum, which will also be held on October 29.

submitted by North Salem School Volunteers are needed for the North Salem

School’s HarvestFest 2010 on Saturday, October 23, from 5-8 p.m. Our annual HarvestFest offers a fun evening of crafts, face painting, games, a cupcake walk, Harvest General Store, Spin Art, and a basket raffle. Tickets are sold at the door on the night of HarvestFest for all the different activities throughout the building. We will have a Life Is Good store again this year, and for the first time, we will be raffling two Scratch Ticket Trees. These tickets will be sold separately from the ones you buy at the door. Note that this raffle is for the adults only. Unfortunately, we will be unable to offer the Hay Ride this year due to construction, but it will return for next year! We need your help to make this event happen. If you are willing to give up just one hour of your time to help, we will have more than enough volunteers to make it successful. Fill out the form that was sent home with your child and return it as soon as possible. We will contact you two weeks prior to the event to let you know where you will be working at HarvestFest. Our basket raffle is a traditional favorite. If you would like to donate to our raffle, indicate that on the return form. We would also like to ask for donations of baked goods to our cupcake walk. These can be homemade goodies or store-bought items—nut-free, please! Baked goods can be dropped off either

Friday, October 22, in the school office or brought with you to HarvestFest. HarvestFest Sponsorships are another way to help out, either through local corporations, businesses, and North Salem staff and families to help defray the cost of this evening. If anyone would like to assist in this way, please send your donation to the school. Checks can be made out to North Salem PTA. We hope to see you at HarvestFest 2010. We thank you in

advance for your support! Thank you to everyone who participated in North Salem

fundraiser. A big thank-you goes out to Loren Faber, who coordinated the fundraiser, which directly benefits our school. The New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) has begun and will run through October 20. Make every effort to have your child arrive at school on time, minimize any absences other than for illnesses, and have him/her get plenty of rest!

Barron

submitted by Barron School First Grade The first grade is off to a great start. September has been a very busy and fun-filled month. Students are getting to know each other and read each other’s names. They are also learning about self-esteem and how each one of us is special. It has been exciting to make so many new friends. In math, students have been writing and exploring numbers in their everyday world. Learning how to make and count tallies, and count

by 2s, 5s, and 10s has been a lot of fun. They are becoming very good observers and they look for numbers and patterns wherever they go. Grandparents’ Day at Barron School was so much fun! Students got to show our Grandparents and Special Friends around their classrooms and all the new things they’ve learned so far. They also learned some very interesting facts about their Grandparents’ schools. As you can see, students have been very busy during this first month of school and we are all looking forward to an exciting year in first grade. was made clear is that New Hampshire is in the midst of a serious fiscal crisis. We need fiscally responsible leadership that will control spending, minimize taxes, and reduce the deficit so that the next generation will not be forced to pay for today’s mistakes. So many aspects of the “New Hampshire

Advantage” are at risk, and this is especially true when it comes to spending and taxes. Over the past four years, we have witnessed our state budget increase by approximately 24 percent. This out-of-control spending has burdened us with an increase in over 60 taxes and fees. This cash grab was not enough to satisfy the spending frenzy, and now we are facing a historic deficit. In just a few short years, we have spent our surplus and started borrowing to pay for this massive spending increase. We can no longer afford to balance our budget with money borrowed and one-time revenues such as bailouts from the federal government.

this climate of economic uncertainty, we need to restore fiscal responsibility to Concord. Whatever else we debate, common sense must prevail on fiscal matters. We can’t spend more than our revenues. Please vote for fiscally responsible representation on November 2.

Ken Blevens, Libertarian for U.S. Senate Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate is the

other choice in this election. The bipartisan choice (the two major party candidate) is now making excuses for the high unemployment, large debt, and continued deficit facing the country, claiming that this time they will fix the problems. These are the same candidates that are often referred to as the lesser of two evils. One candidate proposes tax credits that are no more than mini stimulus packages that are only feel- good solutions. This candidate also proposes the Granny D amendment to stop corporate corruption. The other candidate’s proposal for a balanced budget amendment will do nothing to reduce the $13 trillion debt. Factually, we need to do much more and actually reduce the debt, not just balance the budget. Rightfully, the debt and the budget are one in the same.

the Bush tax cuts. As an incentive to business, I would propose legislation to repeal all the minimum wage laws. The effect of this will be to allow small and large business to compete and not have to move to Mexico and other countries that have no minimums. Wages should always be a voluntary contractual agreement between an employee and employer. By keeping these businesses here, it would generate more tax revenue and help eliminate deficit spending, and could even produce a profit and reduce the debt. War in Afghanistan: Factually, Afghanistan is a model of what the founders imagined this country to be with very little central government. Our present interventionist policies are only creating distain for ourselves. I therefore would support an immediate orderly withdrawal of all our military. Climate Change is a fact; the cause is the question. As of today, there are questions on the source of the material collected. Without verifiable information, I would be inclined to believe that climate change is not caused exclusively by human activity. Second Amendment: I support the second amendment – the right to bear arms – and will vote to repeal any law that infringes on that right. Abortion: I am pro-choice and do not believe
