Pelham~Windham News Pythons Cap Successful Golf Season

by Chris White The Pelham Pythons finished up their best golf season in school history last week at Beaver Meadow Golf Course in Concord. After posting a record of 17-4 for fourth place in the regular season standings, the Pythons braved the elements last Thursday to take seventh overall at the Division 2 Championships. The seventh-place finish is the highest a Pelham team has ever finished at the golf state championships. In some rainy weather conditions, the Pythons

collectively shot a 431 overall, as they were led by Nick Neary and Alex Newton. Neary shot an 80 for the 18-hole course to be Pelham’s low man for the day, while Newton ended up with an 82. Their performances qualified them to participate in the Division 2 Individual Championship the following Saturday, where Newton shot an 83 to tie for 12th overall and Neary shot an 85. Thursday’s team championship round was also the final outing in a Pelham uniform for senior Jesse Vaiknoras. Vaiknoras made some outstanding contributions in his last season with the Pythons. The 2010 season included Vaiknoras taking medalist honors on three different occasions and setting a school record by registering a 34 over nine holes at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands Golf Course in Salem. Despite the loss of Vaiknoras after this season,

the Pythons plan to return a strong, young group of players to the team next year. In addition to Neary and Newton, Pelham will return other significant contributors such as Doug Carton, Alec Surprenant, Dan Roberts, Jake Vaiknoras, and Alec Carignon. They are young players who are focused on improving and winning a championship. “This is a very young team and they’re all very

good,” Pelham coach Joe Vaiknoras said. “If not next year, then the year after—they have the potential to be the best team in the state.”
