Rik Emmett 's Guitar Heroes Dec. 3/10

Another popular return this season is The Standard OrchEXTRA series that presents unique symphonic twists on popular music featuring the Jeans ‘n Classics Band and the Niagara Symphony.

On Dec. 3, Triumph frontman, solo jazz arti st and guitar guru Rik Emmett will join those musical ensembles to pay tribute to some of his guitar heroes, including Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and Mark Knopfl er.

Peter Brennan created Jeans ‘n Classics about 15 years ago with a one-off Elton John show. The endeavour now produces more than 80 shows annually across North America and Europe.

Brennan has developed performances featuring songs by a band or arti st (The Eagles, Prince, Abba, etc.) as well as

themed events that highlight disco or Motown favourites, for example.

Oft en, the shows have a headlining star, such as in Rik Emmett ’s Guitar Heroes. This concert covers more than four decades of songs by great guitarists, including some of Emmett ’s original material.

“What people will hear is the bett er part of 40-plus years’ worth of diff erent styles,” Brennan said. “They’ll get a nostalgia fi x. Anyone from 25 to 70 would dig it.”

Emmett , who is a Canadian Rock and JUNO Hall of Fame inductee, said the guitarists he covers in the show were the role models of his teenage years.

“We would learn their songs for our basement and garage bands, back in the day. Their styles were

inspiring. Their ability to use the guitar - perhaps the singlemost symbolic icon of our generati on - to paint soulful, emoti onal pictures made me think, ‘Wow, do I ever want to try to do that, too,’” he said.

What Emmett likes most about performing with an orchestra is the pure size and sound you can’t get in any other way. “Modern digital technology cannot fi ll the air with sound waves the way an orchestra can. All of those human beings, making natural, organic sound together is a unique social and cultural acti vity, and every concert is a unique experience,” Emmett said.
