For summer shopping… July is the time to go shopping in France. Sales are officially sanctioned by the government twice a year in January and July. Lasting around six weeks, the reductions get progressively better as the sale drags on. Everything from shoes to shower curtains are on offer at a discount, and price tags on designer items can be slashed by as much as 80 per cent. The French soldes are a competitive sport, so give yourself a fighting chance by scouting out hot items pre-sale and put your trainers on for the big day. Many Parisians wait until midway through the sale season as second reductions often offer the best bargains.

For lunch in the shade… Paris can be hot and sticky in the summer months, so head to one of its many parks to indulge in a long luxurious lunch in the cool shade of a tree. The spectacular statue-studded Jardins des Tuileries are perfectly placed if you’ve been designer shopping in Rue Saint-Honoré or the Place Vendôme. There are four cafes – Le Café Véry is of particular note – but if a picnic is more to your taste there are hundreds of comfortable chairs to relax in (walking or sitting on the grass is forbidden). For a post-lunch stroll, it’s worth taking in the newly renovated Musée de l’Orangeries on the Seine-side terrace, which houses works by Renoir, Cézanne and Rodin. The star of the show, however, is Monet, with eight large water lily paintings. www.musee-orangerie.fr
