Moments by Randy Calligan

By the wheelchair wheel, a breeze blew by my feet today As sweet and gentle as it came, it turned and blew away A fleeting instant, a familiar scent

A lifetime of memories that came and went In a single moment

Sun rays creep through the blinds and lay asleep upon the floor And leaves come in that open door And keep swirling and swirling They too will blow afar one day

As do moments, these leaves blow away Drifting through the years thoughts flee

Restless like those leaves blowing in the winds of change I find myself grabbing on, taking you with me On these little trips my heart’s arranged The royal caller came in to announce

The jelly faced princess in the mixed up gowns So bubbly, so happy, such innocent eyes

“Daddy you be the coachman and I... will be the cat “ But when the breeze blew by

It captured that moment of you and I You waving good bye…and I The king of so little time Driving off to work

Then too those toys and tea parties faded, and blew away And so many years passed as if moments of a single day Now ‘tis “I” who waits

Like a puppy waits…like the old woman that waits With such bated and hopeful eyes By that door all day

And when it opens, raindrops like tears blow in

And everything starts swirling and swirling again But they too will blow afar one day

As do these moments, those tears blow away I miss you so

For I too am again a child in a tired old man

And I pleaded for your call as if into an old tin can… With a string attached

Somehow a phone I’d made, with some hope and some memories I’d saved There I pleaded till tears with it pressed to my ears But the sweetness of your voice never came

This God awful longing never ceases My puzzles have millions of pieces

Meticulously piled yet confused in my mind And though none when I was young Now there’s years I’ve become

Buried in time, time, and more time I dropped the can, and the room went a ’blur

And tears made streaks of the street light’s light And the night…fell silent

Oh God...may nothing change It was beautiful… as it was So short, so sweet

And in these moments we’ll forever meet A door will open

A breeze will rush in

And like fall leaves, like voices in an old tin can Like memories blowing into the winds of change They’ll all blow afar one day As do sad thoughts

Those moments blow away 47
