Youth Teens to evaluate unpublished books Local synchronized swim
Perry Branch Library in Gilbert was recently selected to serve until 2012 as one of teams join forces 16 sites around the nation where teens will evaluate unpublished books from more than 20 publishers.
Each of the selected participating libraries is provided galley copies of young adult titles for review and feedback to the publishers. “To be tabbed to participate in this process is really quite an honor,” says Allison Burke, Perry Branch teen services supervisor. “Each library honoree is extended a two-year stint on this national evaluation team.” This year’s fi nal Teens’ Top Ten will be announced during YALSA’s Teen Read Week later in October. Chandler Unified School District Oct. 4-14: Fall intersession
Oct. 19-20: Teacher in-service/workdays; no school CTA-Independence Hawks
PTO news – Cookie dough sales recently ended and delivery is scheduled for Oct. 28 after school. The next PTO meeting is at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Media Center. Box Tops – Families are asked to continue cutting out box tops and sending them in as the next contest begins after fall intersession. Last year CTA-Independence earned more than $5,000 to pay for supplies supporting its curriculum. Soup labels – Coach Robin is collecting Campbell’s soup labels as well as Labels for Education on a variety of items. Families can cut the UPC codes off the labels and turn them into the front office. Proceeds will pay for recess equipment. Class notes – The sixth-grade classes’ study of ancient Egypt culminated in an Egyptian Fair representing various aspects of ancient Egyptian life that had been studied. Students showcased visual aides and practiced presentation skills as they guided the rest of the school through the wonders of ancient Egypt. Students also mummified hot dogs to gain hands-on experience with the process of mummification. Thanks due – Thanks to Master Sgt. Driver and the group of Hamilton High Junior ROTC cadets who came to teach CTA-Independence’s newly formed Flag Corps the proper etiquette for raising, lowering and folding the flag. Students learned the procedures and had fun in the process. —Lori Walter
