First Time Homebuyer class now on weekends

Families can now attend weekend sessions explaining the city’s First Time Homebuyer’s Program.

The one-hour weekend sessions are held at 9 a.m. Sat., Oct. 9 and Sat., Oct. 16 in Room 206 of the Chandler Community Center, 125 E. Commonwealth Avenue. Four additional workshops will be held on the following weekdays starting at 6:30 p.m. in Room 205 of the Chandler Community Center: Tue., Oct. 5, Oct. 26, Nov. 16 and 30.

According to city spokesman Jim Phipps, Chandler’s First Time Homebuyer’s program has helped 11 families purchase homes in Chandler. Under the program, the purchase price of a home is reduced because the buyer only has to afford the cost of the structure, not the land. The land is held in a trust managed by the Newtown Community Development Corporation, a nonprofi t group working with the City to administer the program. Qualifi ed buyers help select the house they want to purchase, and the homes receive extensive renovation, including new appliances, paint, carpet, weatherproofi ng, landscaping and repairs, or replacement of roofs, windows, and doors. Homes can be purchased in any area of the City and Newtown helps arrange fi nancing and offers down payment assistance, credit repair, homebuyer education and ongoing support after the purchase.

To qualify, buyers cannot have owned a home in the last three years and a family of four cannot make more than $80,000. To register or learn more, call Chandler’s Neighborhood Resources Division at 480-782-4320, or contact Newtown Development Corporation at 480-517-1589.
