Goddard School joins national celebration of play

The Goddard School, whose philosophy is teaching children learning through play, is the exclusive preschool sponsor for Play for Tomorrow’s “Ultimate Block Party: The Arts and Sciences of Play,” a major celebration taking place on Sun., Oct. 3 in New York City’s Central Park.

The event recognizes the impact of play on what children become as adults. The Goddard School of Gilbert recently participated in a nationally synchronized game of Simon Says and held a mini block party event to celebrate Goddard School’s participation in the new Play for Tomorrow project. Chandler teens invited to Unitown Camp

Chandler students ages 14 to 18 years are invited to attend the City of Chandler’s annual Unitown Camp Oct. 6 through 11 in Prescott. Unitown Camp, which takes place during Chandler Unifi ed School District’s fall intersession, is a diversity and leadership development camp designed to inspire a new generation to work toward making Chandler a better place to live, work and play. The low-cost residential camp program brings young people from all over the City together to address issues that affect Chandler-area teens on a daily basis, such as racism, violence in the community, cliques and more.

The City’s Recreation Division hosts the camp, which is attended by approximately 75 high school-age youth, 25 counselors and advisors and two directors. The counselors and advisors are comprised of City recreation staff, CUSD teachers and counselors and Chandler community members.

Camp fee is $40 for residents and $54 for nonresidents, which includes transportation, housing and all meals. Acceptance is based on the completeness of the application, date submitted and other factors ensuring a diverse camp. For more information or to download an application, visit www.chandleraz.gov/teens. Applications can also be picked up at all Chandler recreation and community centers and libraries.

October 2 - 15, 2010 Aim High teaches from ground up

The goals of Aim High Institute (AHI), a second-year K through 8 charter school in Chandler, are to provide a global learning approach from the ground up, in addition to offering the best education in a safe environment. In addition, the primary mission of AHI is to offer excellence in academics, particularly in STEMG - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Globalism – as well as character education, promote bilingualism, cultural diversity, and offer a comprehensive and balanced program to enhance the student’s potential. Aim High strives to raise upright, tolerant and law-abiding lifelong learners to be leaders of the future.

“The AHI founders seek to teach students vital skills so that they may compete internationally and communicate in a global society,” says Aim High Principal Romualda Banaszczyk, M.Ed. “In addition to the rigorous Singapore Math, Singapore Science, Spalding Method for English, and Core Knowledge curricula, Aim High also offers Singbacus – Abacus combined with Singapore Math – and Mathlete programs to advanced students.”

She says students, including kindergarteners, will learn a second language of their choice – Hindi, Chinese, or Arabic – for an hour a day, fi ve days a week. Starting this fall, kindergarteners at Aim High have an additional choice, the Chinese Immersion program, which provides the all-day life experience of learning this language. Aim High offers full-day kindergarten free of charge. Other programs for students at Aim High include gardening, healthy eating habits, music and creative arts and have the opportunity to participate in monthly international events.

“With strong conviction, determination, implementation of humanitarian values, and a carefully developed academic program, AHI educators are preparing our students to meet the challenges of the coming millennium,” adds Banaszczyk.

Aim High classes begin at 8 a.m. and fi nish at 3 p.m. The school year is 181 days, following Arizona’s typical 180-day schedule. Interested parents are welcome to monthly open houses, or drop by for an hour with the principal on Tuesdays. Aim High is located at 2716 N.
