CONSTRUCTION Update

Arizona Avenue construction continues

Traffic control continues to be one lane in each direction along Arizona Avenue with traffic pushed to the center of Arizona Avenue from Frye Road to Chandler Boulevard as work continues to narrow the roadway, widen sidewalks, add bike lanes and other amenities. According to spokesperson Teresa Makinen, this traffic configuration is in place so that sidewalk and curb removals on the outside lanes of Arizona Avenue in the project area can take place. As a coordinating project, Makinen says work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) site is also under way. Curb, gutter and footings have been installed, and the slab is currently being scheduled with the structure installation taking place after the slab is formed and poured. This work is taking place on the west side of Arizona Avenue, south of Chandler Boulevard, and is occurring within existing traffic control. She points out that the galvanized metal street lights in the project area are “only temporary” and are not the street lights which will be in place when the project is completed. Existing traffic signal poles will

also be repainted to match the design for the corridor. Meanwhile, crews continue work from Buffalo Street to Chandler Boulevard pouring seat walls, art pads and lithocrete on both sides of Arizona Avenue. In addition, crews continue work in this area with miscellaneous banding and brick paver installation between the cross bands and miscellaneous trees and plants are going in throughout the project. Crews continue work near Uptown Bridal to finish the work at the corner, and also remove a small piece of sidewalk on the south side of Boston Street where the curb makes the turn in front of Uptown Bridal. This area will be prepared for forming, pouring of concrete and brick paver installation. Customers continue to have access via the entrance from Arizona Avenue. Crews continue work this week to form and pour concrete for back bands and cross bands in the area on the west side of Arizona Avenue from the alley behind Boston Street to Chicago. This concrete work will be directly followed by brick paver installation in this area.

At press time, Chicago Street was closed on the west side of Arizona Avenue for about two weeks. During this time, Arizona Avenue will continue to permit one lane north and southbound; however, Arizona Avenue traffic will not have access to Chicago Street. During construction, Makinen says Arizona Avenue will remain open and should always have at least one lane in each direction in the corridor, except for possible coordinated weekend work when necessary in the intersection at Boston, Buffalo or Frye. In addition, there should always be left-turn access into the historic square either via Buffalo or Boston.
