www.SanTanSun.com CGCC learning communities

For nearly 20 years, Chandler-Gilbert Community College has offered “learning communities,” integrating skills courses with content courses in ways that connect the knowledge of each course and often ultimately provide a more in-depth education for students.

For example, “Molecules, Membranes and Me” combines fi rst-year composition and biology, while “Improve Your MATHitude” integrates introductory algebra and study skills development.

David Finley, CGCC English faculty, teaches multiple learning communities at CGCC which combine fi rst-year composition with humanities and history courses, including “Aztlan to Zoot Suit: Exploring Narratives of Mexican American History and Culture,” “Freedom and Terror: Cultures in Confl ict” and “Drugs, Death and Debauchery: Stories from the American Road.” “The benefi t is not just taking two courses with an integrated curriculum, but seeing connections across disciplines,” says Finley.

“There is more classroom time, which allows for a deeper understanding of course material and for students to engage in interesting and in-depth projects and fi eldtrips,” agrees CGCC English faculty Yvonne Reineke.
