thegreenmoleforum For a sustainable Mole Valley

This month sees the biggest ever day of positive action on climate change. Around the world people will take simple steps to reduce their emissions, cutting carbon and sending a powerful message to leaders.

Attendees at last month’s Transition Bookham open meeting had the chance to make tinctures, guided by our very own ‘Green Granny’, Anne Brewer.

There was a choice of lavender, with its calming properties and an aid to sleep, or echinacea, to boost immunity and ward off colds, both from members’ gardens. This month’s meeting, ‘Let’s talk rubbish!’, will focus on reduction, reuse and recycling.

Their St Nicolas’ Pastoral Centre biodiversity garden continues to improve, with the next planned ‘upgrade’ being a herb spiral. The bug hotel is already occupied!

In the UK 20 million mobiles end up in land- fill a year, taking over 1,000 years to break down. Only 11% are resold or recycled. Use charity or company prepaid envelopes, or use the box in St Nicolas’ church tower.

An average Brit’s intake of protein is 25%-50% above World Health Organisation recommendations. Largely from meat, consumption is 50% up on 40 years ago.

A UN report says agriculture, in particular meat and dairy, accounts for 70% of fresh water consumption, 38% total land use and 19% of greenhouse gas emissions. It urges eating less meat to reduce climate change.

Bookham Common was host to sustainable crafts, like furniture and fence making, woodturning and sculpting, as part of this September’s annual Heritage Weekend.

As October 1st is World Vegetarian Day, why

not try a meatless menu. The UK adopting Meat Free Monday would save more carbon than taking five million cars off the road.

After record-breaking highs reported around the world, we’re now seeing unusually low temperatures, with snow falling a month earlier than expected in the Alps.

Solar activity is at a minimum and there’s possible disruption of the Gulf Stream, due to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (pictured) and polluted dead zones, there’s even talk that we might be entering a mini ice age!
