Dementia facts & Alzheimer Scotland
• There are approximately 71,000 people with dementia in Scotland. By 2031, that figure is expected to increase to between 130,000 and 140,000.
• Around 7,500 people are diagnosed with dementia every year.
• 60% of people with dementia in Scotland live in the community.
• A vast amount of care for people with dementia is provided by informal carers who, compared with non-carers, are more likely to take prescribed medication, visit their GP and report higher levels of stress and physical symptoms.
• The cost of dementia to the Scottish economy is in the region of £1.7 billion per year. Of that, 41% is the cost of residential care. By 2031, this cost is expected to rise to £2.9 billion.
Alzheimer Scotland is Scotland’s foremost charity helping people with dementia and their families. Our vision is that no- one should go through dementia on their own. We provide:
• Support for people with dementia and carers to have their voices heard by policy makers nationally and locally;
• A 24hr Freephone Dementia Helpline, and information for people with dementia, carers and professionals;
• Dementia Advisors to support people with dementia and their families as a point of contact throughout the journey of the illness. Our target is one in every local authority area - we are halfway there;
• A range of specialist dementia care services in the community to enable people with dementia to remain at home for as long as possible, including: home support, day care, counselling, support groups and training for people with dementia and carers;
• Three Specialist Dementia Nurses in NHS Boards at any one time (with the aim that all health boards will mainstream these posts to improve competencies of medical and nursing staff);
• Research; • Awareness raising.
