School News Soule

submitted by Soule School The fifth grade at Soule School has begun our science inquiry about Plants. We are classifying, observing, experimenting, and reading about the great variety in the Plant Kingdom. Currently, we are designing photosynthesis posters with a partner to be presented to the class. When we learn more about deciduous and coniferous trees, we will collect 10 leaves to be compiled into a Leaf Book, and again, we will share what we’ve learned with each other. In Social Studies, it’s all about mapping. Latitude, longitude, legends, land features, as well as political and physical maps help us locate places in the world using our Atlases. In mathematics, knowledge of our

multiplication facts has been important tools to understand factoring, prime and composite numbers, and exponential notation. During our literacy block, we are reading our own choice novels while keeping in mind that our choices need to be “just right” in order to comprehend and think deeply about the text. In writing, we have written poetry and short stories about people or places that are close to our hearts. In triad groups, we read and respond to each other for valued feedback. Then, we revise and edit our pieces. Lastly, we always share our final pieces. Fifth graders will be taking the NECAP test starting in October. We are ready to show all we know!

North Salem

submitted by North Salem School An exciting fall tradition returns to North Salem with new extended hours! Plans are currently underway for North Salem’s annual HarvestFest, scheduled for October 23. Due to the extreme popularity of this event, this year’s HarvestFest will begin an hour earlier, starting at 5 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. HarvestFest is centered around family fun and is a festival-type event held inside the school, offering a spectacular evening of crafts, games, face painting, a cupcake walk, food, a Harvest General Store, and raffle prizes. The Harvest Canteen will be open to serve pizza, drinks, popcorn, and other fall goodies. We need volunteers to help make this event happen! If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please keep this date open and be sure to fill out the HarvestFest form that will be sent home with your child shortly. The first meeting of the North Salem PTA was a great success. We welcomed many new faces, as well as existing members. The PTA discussed some major goals for this school year, one of

Program (NECAP) begins next week and will run from October 4-20. NECAP is a series of reading, writing, mathematics, and science achievement tests, administered annually. Student scores are reported at four levels of academic achievement: Proficient with Distinction, Proficient, Partially Proficient, and Substantially Below Proficient. Reading and math are assessed in grades 3-8 and 11; writing is assessed in grades 5, 8, and 11; and science is assessed in grades 4, 8, and 11. The reading, math, and writing tests are administered each year in October. The science tests will be administered in May. Make every effort to have your child arrive at school on time during those weeks, minimizing any absences other than for illnesses, and have them get plenty of rest.

159 Main Street, Salem, NH Barron Hosts Grandparents’ Day

by Robyn Hatch The Barron School once again presented a

Grandparents’ Day on September 23, during which all grandparents were invited to the activities to join the parents and special friends in the rooms to meet the teachers, and to also share breakfast in the cafeteria. Everyone worked on projects with their families, and previous homework was on display to share with the families as well. During the day, some students were shy with their family members while others were outgoing, but all seemed really proud that their families took time out of their busy day to be with them.

Hampstead Academy Fifth Graders Depart for the 1800s and Mystic Seaport

submitted by Hampstead Academy Ahoy! Hampstead Academy’s fifth-

grade class embarked on a trip through time this Wednesday, September 29. They are visiting Mystic Seaport in Connecticut for a three-day overnight program called Ship to Shore. It is an opportunity to immerse students in history. The students will stay aboard the Joseph Conrad, an 1882 fully rigged ship, at night, and will explore Mystic Seaport’s 19th century village by day. They will enjoy a carefully planned program to enhance their understanding of American History, as well as the skills and traditions of the seafarer. This program uses the ships, exhibits, and waterfront sites of Mystic Seaport as a learning environment. The students will be encouraged to solve problems

cooperatively and accept new challenges as they discover and apply traditional skills of the time. Bon voyage, Hampstead Academy Grade Five!

In Social Studies, second graders have been learning about different types of communities, and in Everyday Math, students are beginning to write their own number stories, explore place values, and solve number-grid puzzles. Children should be practicing their addition and subtraction math facts at home. Readers and Writers Workshop is becoming two favorite parts of our day. In Readers’ Workshop, students learn about a reading strategy, practice it on their own, and share their successes with the class. In Writers’ Workshop, children have been writing in “Interest Journals” and doing “Quick Writes.” Our budding authors love to share their written work with the class! September is flying by and students look forward to a wonderful year in second grade!
