Take a Break! H
ave you considered a low cost family break with one of the RAF Charities? Here we look a just a couple of
the options open to Serving personnel and their families.
The Hemsby Chalets Run by the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) The Hemsby Chalets are a well-equipped,
self-catering facility located on the east coast of Norfolk, close to Great Yarmouth and the Norfolk Broads are available to the whole RAF and offer a great base to enjoy leisure pursuits and activities in the area.
Peter Soanes, a serving air traffic controller at Northolt opted for a holiday at the chalet for himself, his wife, Jane and their three young children. Their daughter, Jessica, suffers from a neurological condition which has left her increasingly wheelchair bound. Jane said: “We were delighted to be given the opportunity of an affordable break and we found the chalet to be perfect. The kids had a great time and I would definitely recommend it!”
Peter said “A lot of people think RAFA is just for veterans but they should not ignore it until they leave the Service. There are lots of things available to serving personnel”.

Seacot House Run by the RAF Benevolent Fund (RAFBF)
The RAFBF is welcoming bookings for a newly refurbished respite holiday home on the West Sussex coast for Serving personnel who find themselves facing difficulties over and above the usual stresses and strains of Service life.
“The expeditionary nature of today’s Air Force means that operational duties often put a strain on family lives,” notes Mike Barter, the RAFBF’s Director of Welfare. “Seacot House is one of a number of initiatives set up to meet those challenges, by offering affordable breaks for those who need them.”
A sergeant from High Wycombe recalls the effect of the week away: ”It has been quite a turbulent year for both me and my husband and this put a strain on our family circumstances as our seven-year-old autistic son finds it very difficult adjusting to new routines.

”The break was just what we all needed. The garden backed onto the beach so we were all able to enjoy lovely walks along the coastline. There was something at the house for everyone even a 47” flat-screen TV with Sky HD, an Xbox and games. On our return home, our son walked into the lounge and exclaimed ‘Quick Dad, look! The telly’s shrunk!’”
