completed Strategic Plan. The board accepted this comprehensive report and was committed to making it a working, living document. One of the strategic initiatives identifi ed was the need to enhance member “ownership” in MAC by increasing member engagement at the club.

Based on the Strategic Plan, the 2010-2011 board charges were identi- fi ed. President Phil Juckeland created an ad hoc committee on communities to further explore development of commu- nities of common interest within the club. President Juckeland appointed Julie Vigeland, past vice president and the fi rst Strategic Planning Committee chair, to head this committee with the following members: Carl Burnham, David DeBlasio, Nancy Sergeant, Karen Sheridan, Sebastian Wetzel, Marjorie Wilson, Biddy Wolf and me. Member Events Manager Lori Martin is also an essential member of our team. We are a diverse group with lots of different MAC committee and club experiences. I haven’t added up all the years of committee service amongst us, but we all speak fondly of our numerous past involvements. These connections are what keep us coming back. Our charge is to fi nd a way to create more community within MAC using a combination of athletic and social programs and committees, member events, our existing facility spaces, and the website. Helping to fi nd even better ways of inte- grating our newest members into our club is a key issue. We know that MAC is a big place; we have more than 565,000 square feet and 20,000 members and we are as big as a city. Our goal is to make our club feel like a small village, and bring members together by creating more opportunities for connections.

Our ad hoc committee began meeting this spring. We discussed the importance of enhancing communication tools for bringing members together, providing meaningful participation for members not in the committee system, and extending volunteerism to include a community service component. Not everyone wants to be on a committee yet many members would like a way to connect with others. After much discussion, MACorps was created with the goal of building commu- nities through volunteerism. Read more about MAC communities beginning on page 36 of this month’s magazine. Also new is MAConnect, a new commu- nity bulletin board located outside the Member Services Offi ce. You will be able to post your ideas for new groups within MAC and fi nd other groups looking for you to join them. We also have a section for announcements in the classifi ed section of The Winged M. If you are hoping to fi nd some folks to start a band, a new needle- point group, or underwater basket weaving, look no farther than the back of The Winged M or our new bulletin board. We are not the fi rst to take on this issue; we are now seeing other clubs around the country also creating groups within their clubs. Kudos to this new ad hoc committee and to Julie Vigeland for her leadership. We are thrilled to be helping to bring people together. We hope we pique your interest and garner your support. You can help start new traditions at MAC. It has been a great honor to serve on the MAC board and this year serve as vice president. It has enriched my life and I’m grateful to the new friends made along the way. It is interesting to also note that so much of my work as executive director of Congregation Beth Israel and my volun- teerism at MAC complement each other. At MAC, we’re calling this coming together of communities MAC Connect, and at CBI we call them chavurot: helping to create communities of friends.

Both MAC and CBI have deep roots within the Portland community and both take great pride in enriching lives, fostering friendships and building upon their tradi- tions of excellence. WM
