erald B. Middleton died July 21. He was a senior preferred member who joined the club in 1948.


Middleton was born in 1917. He attended Washington High School in Portland and graduated from Oregon State University in 1943.


Middleton served as a pilot in the Philippines in the U.S. Army in World War II as a captain and later attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. His job history was varied; he taught at his former high school, was a United States marshal, a firefighter, a builder, and a real estate investor. Survivors include his sons, Wade and Blake; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor. Garrett Starr died Aug. 26. He was a senior preferred member who joined the club in 1965.


Starr was born in Portland in 1943. He attended Milwaukie and Lake Oswego high schools, Stanford University, and graduated from Portland State University. He worked for nearly 40 years as a self-employed manufacturer’s representative. Survivors include his children, Jenna, Jeff and Heather; and sisters, Claudia Starr and Susan Peacock. Dr. Loyal Marsh died Aug. 29. He was a senior preferred member who joined the club in 1973.


Marsh was born in Plentywood, Mont., in 1931. He graduated from Gongaza Preparatory School, received his undergrad- uate degree in psychology and philosophy from Gongaza University, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from University of Portland. He was in private practice for 30 years, and director of St. Mary’s Home for Boys for 40 years. While in practice, Marsh also was on staff at the Oregon Commission for the Blind, as well as being on the faculty at Oregon Health & Science University medical and dental schools, the police academy, and Mt. Angel Abbey. He also served as president of the board of direc- tors of Jesuit High School, president of Birthright of Oregon, and president of Raleigh Hills Little League.


Survivors include his children, Douglas, Kimberly, Kellee, Daniel, Michael, Patrick


and James; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret. Donald A. Miller died Aug. 27. He was a senior family preferred member who joined the club in 1973.


Miller was born in Portland in 1925. At age 16, he signed on with a U.S. Merchant Marine Standard Oil tanker. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17, and served in action during World War II. After the war, Miller attended Oregon State College. He began a career in the automobile industry working for his uncle at the Alexander DeSoto and Plymouth dealership. He became a vested partner and ultimately sole owner of Alexander Chrysler Plymouth. During his career, he served as president of the Portland Used Car Dealers; president of the Portland New Car Dealers; was a member of the National Auto Dealers Association; and served as the chairman of four auto shows. He was elected to the National Dealer Council and subsequently served as chairman of the National Advertising Council.


Miller was affiliated with a fraternity of pilots known as the Quiet Birdmen. He was a member of the Columbia Aviation Association and Columbia Seaplane Association.


Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; son, Ron; two grandchildren; and his former wife, Dorothy. He was preceded in death by his son David. James K. Neill died Sept. 1. He was a senior family preferred member who joined the club in 1972.


Neill was born in Portland in 1945. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1963 and went on to Oregon State University. He studied law at Willamette University.


After law school, Neill began his career at Martin & Robertson. In 1973 he became a partner and helped grow the firm into Davis Wright Tremaine. He spent many years as managing partner while carving a new specialty in hospitality law and co-founded of Alcohol Industry Attorneys and Consultants. Neill was a member of Waverly Golf and Country Club, the Restaurant Association of Oregon, the Oregon

and Washington Bar associations, and Moreland Presbyterian Church. He volunteered for numerous groups, including Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association, Regional Arts and Cultural Council, Friends of the Performing Arts Center and the Portland Rose Festival Association. He served on several boards, including Oregon Restaurant Association, Mount Hood Museum and Cultural Center, and the Washington State Hotel and Lodging Association.


He received many awards during his life; most recently he was honored with the Oregon Restaurant Association’s industry achievement award.


Survivors include his wife, Katy;


daughter, Erin; son, Geoffrey; sister, Lou Anne; and three grandchildren.
