Student zine chosen for German exhibit
A photographicmagazine pro- duced by four LC students re- ceived entry into an exclusive art exhibition that took place in Leipzig, Germany, inMay. The ex- hibition explored the newmedia of zines, especially those that tra- verse differentmedia. The student collective, coteriemagazine, was reviewed and accepted by the cu- rator of the D21 Kunstraumgallery. Student editors of themagazine are artmajors Brandon Hunter ’10, KimDavies ’10, andMyles “Millie” Coleman ’11, and edu- cationmajor LaurenMiller ’11. ArtZines are small art publica-
tions that circulate in a variety of forms and shapes in print and on- line versions. The show shed light on an artisticmediumthat has gained visibility, popularity, and presence in contemporary art insti- tutions. The publications were archived and are accessible in the arts library of Halle 14, another non-profit organization in Leipzig.

Social Sciences shine
lc professors and students were recognized for their scholarship at the Virginia Social Science Associa- tion annualmeeting. Dr. KimberlyMcCabe, professor of sociology
and dean of the School ofHumanities and Social Sciences, was the recipient of the vssa 2010 Scholar Award in Sociology at the annualmeeting’s plenary session, where she delivered a talk on what inspired and led her to a life of scholarship. Christopher Edwards ’13 was chosen by the vssa
Board as one of five “BestUndergraduate Presenta- tions” for his talk, “With AllDeliberate Speed: Free Schools in Prince Edward County.” Tessa Evans ’12
won honorablemention in the PeterWallenstein BestUndergraduate Paper Award, placing fourth in a field of nearly forty papers representing six disci- plines. She presented “ANew Revival:The Influence of African-American Religion on PlantationWomen in the American South.” lc’s other student presenters were Samantha
Bryant ’11, Ellie Rapp ’11,Haylee Nelson ’10, DanielleMiller ’10, and Jenna Jewell ’10. Faculty presenters includedDr. Kirt vonDaacke, associate professor of history; BethWood, adjunct professor of history; andDr. Gabe Santos andDr. KenWag- ner, assistant professors of sociology.
Jamestowne Society
Cheryl Rychkov, an m.a. student in history, was awarded one of two Jamestowne Society Fellowships for 2010. She is researching how women had to protect their reputations when they came to Virginia in the seventeenth century. Cheryl used the fellowship to examine court cases involving slander and libel.The Jamestowne Society offers an Annual Fellowship in the amount of $2,000 to support completion of a graduate thesis or essay on the history and culture of Virginia before 1700.
