M.B.A. students top in strategy game

A purple toilet, pink bras, shaved heads
Students raised nearly $66,000 dur- ing the 2009-10 academic year for a variety of good causes, including Haiti earthquake victims and the homeless. A purple toilet or pink bra ap-
peared in yards near LC as students engaged in a variety of fundraisers to battle cancer. A total of 545 stu- dents raised $32,000 for the Ameri- can Cancer Society Relay for Life through a variety of fundraisers, in-
cluding the purple toilet brigade. Residents had to pay to have the toilet removed fromtheir lawn. To battle breast cancer, the Pan-
hellenic Council raised $1,652 in the “PennyWars,” while a Breast Cancer Awareness auction raised another $507. Pink banners and bras draped the Sigma Phi Epsilon House to promote the auction. Devon Harp ’11 shaved her long locks to help raise nearly
$3,000 for St. Baldrick’s Founda- tion, which funds cancer research. Four other students—Tony Dulak ’11, Jessica Gibbs ’11, TimWolff ’09, and JaredMelot ’09, a gradu- ate student—also gave up their hair at half time of a women’s soc- cer game for the cause. The second biggest fundraiser
was theMSWalk, which hauled in $24,325.
A semester atOxford
ConorMcFarland ’11 hopes a semester studyingmetaphysics atOxfordUniversity will help himanswer life’s big ques- tions. An international rela- tions and philosophy double major with aminor in history, Conor will spend the fall se- mester atHertford College. Conor, who hails fromMan- assas, Virginia, is amember of
theWestoverHonors Society and a Bonner Leader, which allows himto see some of life’s questions up
close.He is a volunteer forMeals onWheels and works with Puppets Alamode, a programto provide people with developmental, intellectual, and physi- cal disabilities an opportunity to be involved in music and the arts.He is also editor of The Bonner Beat, a new student publication that fills the campus community in on the amazing work done by stu- dents in the Bonner Leaders Program. “I’ve become really interested in publication and communica- tion,” Conor said.He spent his summer doing an internship in Camden,New Jersey, helping Cooper Hospital revitalize some of its property to bring business and affordable housing into the area.
A teamof lc m.b.a. students tied for first place among 3,985 teams from263 colleges and universities participating in a worldwide simulation called The Business Strategy Game. David Brown,David Fisher, and Chris Rhodes, who all received theirM.B.A. degrees inMay, were inDr.Maria Nathan’s capstone m.b.a. course.Their teamof Advan- tage Footwear (Company a) earned aGlobalTop 100 rank- ing forOverall Score.Their score of 110 tied for the best overall score performance. “This lc teamhas been a top- ranked contender throughout the semester, and they out-per- formed competitor teams from schools that are very highly ranked academically,” saidDr. Nathan, professor ofmanage- ment. The Business Strategy Game is an online exercise in which classmembers are di- vided into teams and assigned the task of running an athletic footwear company in head-to- head competition against com- paniesmanaged by other class members.
