Fifties fl air from Creative Tops
The fi fties were an exciting time for contemporary design, with many leading British manufacturers taking a lead in the
commissioning and supporting young, talented artists and designers.
This new-found zest for designs free from the constraints of tradition forged a climate of experimentation and innovation. In homage to this era, Creative Tops are proud to present eight designs on mugs taken from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s textiles and wallpaper collections. They feature some of the genres most successful contemporary artists including Lucienne Day, Jacqueline Groag, Terence Conran and Marian Mahler. These new collections were spotted at this years Autumn Fair in Birmingham.

Reiko Kaneko will launch a striking new collection of drinking glasses this autumn called ‘Arctic’- made, unusually, in English fi ne bone china. Reiko has designed a range of three different sized white beakers to be used for wine, champagne, cocktails and shots. The curious choice of porcelain derives from Reiko’s Japanese heritage. In Japan it is common to drink from ceramic sake cups, but even beer and wine is often drunk from ceramic vessels. This inspired Reiko to design her contemporary ‘Artic’ collection using the highest quality fi ne bone china, hand crafted in Stoke-on-Trent. Bone china is intensely white and, although it has a translucent effect, it is used for its strength, which allows for a very thin lip. This gives ‘Arctic’ its ultra-refi ned and delicate aesthetic. It also gives a very satisfying sound when clinked together!
