Previous methodology

Up until this latest investment, the doctors at the healthcare trust have been attending the patient at the bedside, writing hand-written notes and asking a junior doctor to go to the nursing station and access information about the history of the patient and whether he or she had any allergies etc. “So there has been a lot time taken up by moving between the bed and the nursing station,” said Jackson. “Staff have also been going back to the nursing station to request the test labels,

Dakota IS first discussed this project with the trust in March of this year. The green light was given around August and the solution is just now in the process of being rolled out. “There has been testing and retesting done on-site where we supplied six complete units incorporating the 2D scanner, the printer, the mobile cart and all the media that went with it,” said Jackson. “We of course had to do the integration in advance for proof of concept, so we hooked up to the trust’s Order Comms system and reformatted the label design and layout into a version they were most comfortable with.” In terms of integration with the healthcare trust’s back office system, Dakota IS had to conduct this as a service rather than as a pure middleware. This process therefore took a little longer. “However it meant a more seamless end product,” said Jackson. All training was done in-house, although Dakota helped the healthcare tust devise the system user manuals. The project was undertaken by Dakota IS in conjunction with the IT staff at the NHS. 
