Mayrise HTC Touch PDAs mobilise Rochdale’s highways inspectors
H
ighways inspectors in Rochdale are achieving significant gains in efficiency following the introduction of mobile
working. Armed with HTC Touch devices running Mayrise Highways Mobile software, the team are able to spend more time in the field undertaking more routine safety inspections and investigating reports from members of the public. This is attributed to the adoption of mobile working, resulting in less time travelling between inspection sites and the office and a reduced administrative burden.
Using Mayrise Highways Mobile software running on the HTC Touch devices each member of Highways inspection team receives their daily schedule prior to the start of their shift. In the field Mayrise MapNow provides access to integrated Ordnance Survey mapping and the Council’s street gazetteer facilitating the location and identification of reported faults or routine safety inspection routes. A series of drop down menus ensures inspection results are recorded and reported in accordance with procedure, and the live linked devices are then used to upload reports to the centralised Mayrise Highways system.

Metropolitan Borough Council. “They don’t need to come into the office to pick up their schedule and they don’t need to return to the office at the end of the day to drop off their reports.” The Partnership delivers Highways, Property and ICT services to support the regeneration of the borough over a 15 year period from April 2006.
Reduced carbon footprint Chadwick continued: “The integrated mapping and street gazetteer make it easy to find faults that may have been highlighted by a previous inspection or reported by members of the public and the drop down menus make the whole reporting process much quicker and less subjective. Since introducing the changes in working practices we have increased efficiency and reduced our carbon footprint by minimising travel and reducing paperwork. We hope to build on these results with the introduction of Mayrise Street Works Mobile in the forthcoming months.”
