MY I-ON DESIGN Kirsten Robeson, interior designer and co- director of bulthaup by Cameron Interiors on Dundas Street, tells us about a few of her favourite things.
What’s your favourite room in your house? Definitely my master bedroom suite. The ensuite is practical and the dressing room gives a little sense of old school luxury. The colour scheme is neutral and calming. The bedroom suite is ideal for helping me unwind after a hard day of interior design and, more importantly, being mum to Max, five, and Nina, one.
What has been the most worthwhile interiors/design investment you’ve made? The kitchen - we spend so much time there. Perhaps predictably, we have a tailormade bulthaup kitchen - a luxury market leader with stunning architectural ergonomics and a beautiful, crisp finish.
Whose style do you admire? John Pawson, due to the simplicity of his architecture and interiors, and understanding of light and space. His work is also reminiscent of another favourite of mine, Le Corbusier.
If money was no object, how would you furnish a home? In a minimalist style with the highest quality of well engineered products.
If you could live somewhere else where would it be? Tuscany. I am half Italian and have a real affinity with the country.
Who would be your dream house guest? Maybe George Clooney 10 years ago but now I’d probably say Supernanny.
How would you describe your ‘signature’ look for your home? Very simple, unassuming exterior with well thought out interiors. Bright airy quality finishes, not overly decorated. Good lighting and as much natural light as possible. Lots of personal photos and obviously the kids toys lying around – not that I have much choice on that one.
My DIY nightmare is... I don’t have one. My husband is in the building trade, thankfully.
The interior I’ve been most impressed with is… The new bulthaup showroom in Milan designed by John Pawson.
Biggest design faux pas people make… Not planning enough well-concealed storage space in which to hide everyday clutter.
The best design in Edinburgh… Old classics like the Glasshouse Hotel or the National Portrait Gallery have beautiful traditional exterior architecture, as does Jenners. For interiors I find the more contemporary Missoni Hotel very appealing for a quirky look.
My top interiors tip… A simple, pure style can be timeless.
Tell us something surprising about your home… We never live in a finished home for more than a year. We are constantly renovating and as we near completion decide it’s time for the next challenge.
For a good housewarming present I’d buy… My favourite Italian cookbook The Silver Spoon, along with a good bottle of Brunello di Montalcino.
