A

picture perfect skyline of gothic spires, labyrinthine cobbled streets, and the inimitable blend of baroque

architecture and European grandeur, have all helped the Czech capital to gain its UNESCO status; yet the thriving metropolis is a Mecca of hotspots for culture, food, fashion and family fun.

To make the most of the city, stay away from the stag saturated New Town and Wenceslas Square, and opt for the picturesque Malá Strana as your base where a melange of Romanesque rotundas, Gothic cathedrals and Renaissance palaces come as standard. I was seduced into a stay at the newest addition to the luxury hotel offering, The Augustine. Created from seven buildings, including the 13th century Augustinian St Thomas’ Monastery, the five star hotel is elegant and sophisticated and offers ‘wow’ views of the Praha Castle.

The rooms, some of which are adjoining for their new Family Affair package which offers kids their own spacious room for free, and parents some peace and quiet, are just the ticket. Ours overlooked the monastery chapel and courtyard and boasted a relaxing colour scheme of muted greens, gold and cream with a range of Czech cubism accessories. The hotel also has the barrel-vaulted Brewery Bar, an award-winning restaurant and spa; perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing.

Prague castle, which is just a short 10 minute walk from The Augustine, is a must-see. Built in the ninth century, the Castle dominates the city’s skyline and it’s impressive with a sprawling complex of cathedrals, palaces, gardens and winding lanes. On the way back down the hill, ignore the overpriced tourist shops - there are downsides to every tourist hub - and reward yourself with a cocktail at Cowboys rooftop garden for one of the best views in town.

The Charles Bridge links Prague’s Old Town to the Malá Strana district, and it’s one of the highlights of the city. Boat rides are available on the River Vltava and are good for a relaxing 50
