A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... | 77

Do you consider your sport as a hobby or a job? There are still a lot of job-like things you have to do but if you enjoy it, I don’t think it counts… so I’d say hobby.

Do you play any other sports? I enjoy surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, snowboarding, running, swimming, mountain biking, road biking, rock climbing and... beer pong.

What would you do if you weren’t a pro windsurfer? Definitely something outdoors - I’m not massively into offices.

How do you train? I try to train by doing as many other sports as possible to keep my fitness levels up. Windsurfing is one of the best sports for all round body fitness so climbing and stand-up paddle boarding is great for my core strength and upper body fitness. Road biking is great for stamina and legs.

Do you go to the gym? I do most of my training on the water but when things are less hectic I try to get to the gym around three times a week. Windsurfing uses a lot of back muscles so I work on my chest and legs. I need a lot of core strength too so most exercises have some kind of balance involved; using fit balls during any

free weight exercises. I find it hard in the gym, I get quite bored but I try to keep focus by listening to my iPod.

What’s your longest period without exercise? About two months – when I ripped the ligaments in my ankle.

Do you have a healthy diet? I think generally I have a healthy diet but windsurfing has quite a big party scene - alcohol is quite a big part of that. During competitions I try to eat lots of carbs as you can burn through a lot of calories during a long day on the water.

Do you take any dietary supplements? In winter training in Cape Town, I have protein powder and multivitamins as we usually spend more than four hours on the water each day for a month. The extra protein keeps my body from aching too much.

What’s your unhealthy vice? I am into Pick’n’Mix at service stations.
