would’ve been a much easier life,” says Cato, “but we needed a new challenge. Neither of us was interested in just repeating ourselves.”

So the London duo looked to a new generation of bands, acts they were booking for their award-winning festival, Lovebox.

“Bands like the Friendly Fires, Klaxons, Passion Pit, LCD Soundsystem, Ladyhawke and MGMT,” says Findlay. “They’re the ones really leading the charge, making genuinely exciting, dance-informed music. And that sound really pushed us back towards people like Bowie, Gary Numan, New Order, Fleetwood Mac and Roxy Music.”

The result is Black Light, a diverse and packed slab of electro-indie featuring on guest vocals big names such as Bryan Ferry and Will Young, but more importantly for the sound of the album, up and coming singers such as Nick Littlemore from Empire of the Sun and SaintSaviour, the livewire frontwoman who has subsequently become an integral part of the band’s live show.

In the case of Bryan Ferry, the band were excited to be working with one of their musical heroes, and it’s the first time the Roxy Music legend has lent his vocals to another band’s song, the intense Shameless.

“That track is totally worth the posh dinners we had to buy to persuade him,” says Findlay with a laugh.

Black Light is certainly an album that challenged the band’s existing fan base, but the ecstatic reception they received when premiering new material from it at the aforementioned Lovebox festival was proof that it was a change in direction worth taking.

“You have to keep things interesting,” says Findlay. “I don’t want to become the Cliff Richard of dance. It’s amazing to make a record at this point in your career that you’re viscerally excited about, but that’s honestly how I feel.”

His bandmate is quick to agree. “I think even people who’ve hated everything we’ve ever made before could absolutely love this record. I’m incredibly proud of it. If I could leave just one album of ours behind, there’s no question which one it would be.”
