Nordic pay-TV operator Canal Digital has appointed Patrik Hofbauer as CEO, with the inten- tion of promoting him to CEO of Telenor Broadcast, Canal Digital’s owner. Hofbauer, who joins from Clear Channel Sweden, will take over from Telenor Broadcast’s current CEO Christian Albech when he resigns in 2012.
BBC Worldwide Channels has appointed Ian McDonough to the role of sen- ior-vice president and general man- ager, EMEA. Formerly vice-president commer- cial development, McDonough takes over from outgoing EMEA head Dean Possenniskie.

Sony Pictures Television has pro- moted Kim Hatamiya as execu- tive vice-president, marketing. She will oversee marketing for the entire division internationally, having previously been in charge of marketing activities for all SPT businesses outside of the US.
Business news channel CNBC has appointed Justine Powell as vice-president distribution, EMEA. She joins CNBC from MTV International where she was vice- president, digital media.
Darren Childs has been con- firmed as the new CEO of UK digi- tal channels group UKTV. Childs, previously managing director of channels at BBC Worldwide, will start in his new role in September. He is already a director of UKTV and his appointment as CEO was widely expected. The company, a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Virgin Media, has
also recruited a new CFO. Jan Gooze-Zijl will take that role and joins from UK MSO Virgin Media.
Pay-TV operator MultiChoice South Africa Holdings has appointed current CEO Nolo Letele as executive chairperson of the board, effective from October 1. Imtiaz Patel, the cur- rent CEO of sports broadcaster SuperSport, will replace him as CEO. Current director Khulu Sibiya will be appointed as lead director on the board, while the current chairman Mandla Langa will retire.
Dawn Airey and Richard Woolfe have left UK commercial broad- caster Five after new owner Richard Desmond culled its sen- ior management team. However, director of digital channels and acquisitions Jeff Ford will remain at the broadcaster and will become programme director. This move, which will see seven of the nine directors leave the company, is part of a cost cutting drive by the Northern & Shell boss. It fol- lows the purchase of the channel from RTL earlier this month for £103.5m (€121m).
Sergey Ivanov has been named director-general of Moscow city network provider MGTS, a sub- sidiary of internet and pay-TV service provider Comstar-UTS. Ivanov replaces Sergey Nazarov, who is taking an advisory role at Comstar’s parent company MTS Group. He was previously director of MTS Centre, looking after 16 regions in central Russia.
ITV has created a new position of chief technology officer and appointed former Sky and BBC exec Paul Dale to the role. Dale will lead the newly formed tech-
nology and platforms directorate and will be responsible for trans- mission, broadcast services and placing ITV content on to various devices. He joins from Asian pay- TV operator Astro where he was head of technology. Separately, Former ITV Studios boss Lee Bartlett has joined factual broad- caster Discovery Communications as executive vice-president, global production management, busi- ness and legal affairs and will be responsible for programme acqui- sitions and local productions for the broadcaster's global channels.
Christian Pinon (pictured), the chairman and CEO of France Telecom-owned media services company GlobeCast is to leave the compa- ny to take up a role in the televi- sion products division at Orange France. Pinon, who will leave GlobeCast on September 30, will be replaced by Olivier Barberot, the former executive vice-presi- dent of human resources at France Telecom/Orange.
ESPN’s EMEA managing director Lynne Frank is swapping her UK- based role at the sports broad- caster for an LA-based interna- tional marketing role at Warner Bros. Frank will leave Disney’s ESPN in September.
Broadcast automation specialist OmniBus has appointed Roger Bowley as regional sales manag- er for the UK and Ireland. Bowley has held senior sales roles vari- ous companies, including Snell and Quantel.
