Leslie J. Baxter, 65, of Salem, died September 19, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a brave battle with cancer. Les was born and educated in Vermont. He
served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. Les was a heavy equipment operator and worked for George Merrill and Son, Inc. in Salem for 41 years. Les was a member of the VFW Post #8546 of
Salem. He enjoyed spending time with his family at Crystal Lake in Vermont, and he also enjoyed hunting, boating and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Pica) Baxter of Salem; daughter, Kerri and her husband Scott Wilde of Derry; brother, Wayland Baxter of Glover, VT; sister, Sharon Bickford of Barton, VT; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Dawson and Savanna Wilde; and two nieces, Stephanie and Regina. Calling hours will be Friday, September 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main Street, Salem. There is no funeral service. Obituaries Attorney James A. Sayer, Jr.
Attorney James A. Sayer, Jr., 98, of Salem, died September 16, 2010, after a short illness. Jim was born December 5, 1911 in Haverhill, MA. Jim graduated from Woodbury High School in 1929 and as class president, went on to study at University of New Hampshire, Tufts University and Boston University Law School. In 1943, Jim enlisted in the Air Force where he was accepted into Officer Candidate School. He
served as a gunnery officer attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant and continued his service through 1958 with the Air Force Reserves. Jim passed the New Hampshire Bar in 1952 at age 40 and went on to serve as Special Justice in the Salem District Court from 1954 to 1975. He maintained a law practice in the Salem Depot until 2008. Together with his brother Louie, Jim owned and operated many businesses including Granite State Speedway in Dover and various drive-in theaters throughout the state of New Hampshire, one of which was the Ole Rock Drive-In at the current site of the Salem Post Office. Jim was active in town and state government, serving as Salem
Debra (Rutstrom) Kennedy
Debra (Rutstrom) Kennedy, 58, of Salem, died September 17, 2010, at her home. Debbie was born in Beverly, MA, the daughter of the late Laura (Grimaldi) and Eric Rutstrom. She had worked as a Key Punch Operator for the Telephone Company. Debbie enjoyed the beach and had a great sense of humor. She will be missed by her family and friends and her service dog, Baxter. She is survived by her daughter, Erin and her husband Chris Jones
of Hyannis, MA; brother, Dante Rutstrom of Kingsport, TN; sisters, Charlotte Silvia of Narragansett, RI, and Kerry McGrath of Exeter; granddaughter, Moryah Jones; and several nieces and nephews. Town Moderator from 1954 to 1966 and again from 1970 to 1972. He was a State Representative to the General Court of NH from 1967 to 1975 and an active member of the Republican Party. Jim was a founding director of the Salem New Hampshire Boys and Girls Club and the Salem New Hampshire Kiwanis Club, and remained active in both throughout the years. As a 75 year member of Spicket Lodge, F &AM #85 of Salem, Jim served as Lodge Master in 1942. Jim was a long-time member of the American Legion and the Greater Salem Bar Association.
His family members include his wife, Sandra; his sons, James E.B.
Sayer and his wife Linda of Manchester, and Andrew L. Sayer of Salem. Jim also leaves his daughters, Stacy Greenlaw of Hampstead, Laura Frost of Kingston, and Wendy Buco of Salem, and 10 grandchildren.
Services were held September 22 at the Goundrey and Dewhirst
