Salem Community Attorney James Sayer, Deceased at 98,

by Jay Hobson Attorney James Sayer, who died last week at the age of 98, left a lasting legacy on several fronts. Sayer was born December 5, 1911,

in Haverhill, MA, and graduated from Woodbury High School in 1929. Friends remember Sayer fondly as a businessman, lawyer, judge, legislator, town moderator, and a man “with a heart of gold.” Former town moderator Larry Belair

served with Sayer in the legislature from 1970 to 1975. “Jim was extremely knowledgeable; really low-key, but really knew the law. He was my best friend in the legislature and would introduce me as his ‘Democratic conscience.’ He was so easy to like and so easy to trust, which made for a very good friend and mentor. Jim was always generous with his time and talents—often to a fault. He would do anything for anybody who needed a break, whether it was legal advice he didn’t charge for or a kind word for everyone. He had a heart of gold,” Belair said. Sayer cared deeply about his town and the people who live here. He was one of the founders of the Boys Club, which later became the Boys & Girls Club, and was on its Board of Directors for decades. “He was passionate about the Boys & Girls Club and a 35-year Board member. As a matter of fact, he was recognized by the National Board of Directors for his long and devoted service to the Club. Even in his 90s, when we were deciding to expand the building, he stood up at the meeting and said, ‘Now’s the time.’ He was a good guy and will surely be missed,” Mike Goodwin of the Boys & Girls Club said. State Representative Ron Belanger also felt Sayer’s leadership in his life. “Jim was a life-long Republican and I had been a Democrat, and because of Jim, I became a Republican. Jim was a businessman as well as a lawyer. He owned several drive-in theaters. One of them was the Ole Rock drive-in that was here as the post office is today. He also

co-sponsored the bill that put ‘Live Free or Die’ on our license plates. He was a long-time member of the Masons and would spend countless hours doing pro-bono [free] legal work for those who needed legal advice and couldn’t pay for it. Someone once said he should take down the sign over his office that read ‘James Sayer, Attorney’ and replace it with one that read ‘Salvation Army Annex’ because of all the free work that he did. He was like a father to me,” Belanger said. It seems Attorney Sayer’s life was like an impressionist painting. When you stand close and look, it has many dots of colors and looks complicated, but when you stand back, those dots of business, philanthropy, duty, and such blend to form an image of a man of many dimensions. A life that will touch many other lives for a very long time.

Cruise-In Event Series Wraps for the Season

by Robyn Hatch Rockingham Park recently finished their Cruise-In for 2010 event series on Friday, September 17, which featured plenty of classic cars, good food, and friends all season. Because Rockingham originally had a wooden track that was used to race cars in the early 1900s, people wondered if it would be possible to get some of the classic cars back to Rockingham to honor its history. After much discussion, it was decided to create a Cruise-In night like others in the area. With DJ Butch and Whip’s Wheels, a monthly publication dedicated to classic cars, on hand at the events, it was very exciting to see the first cars arrive for the first event at the track, which brought in around 80 cars. The next date brought in over 110 cars, and the amount of people who showed up increased with each night. On July 4, Cruise-In brought in over 210 cars.

One of the outstanding surprises of the final Cruise-In night on September 17 was a car “Devil’s Ride,” a 1934 Ford that just completed a countrywide tour. This incredible car is owned by Salem resident Archie DeForio, and it is so unusual that it needs to be seen in person to fully enjoy the artwork put into its custom design. This car does 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds, and it is sponsored by Cash For Gold, located on South Broadway in Salem.

Brings Salem Together for Food, Fun, and Community

Salem Community Patriot

On an incredibly nice Saturday and Sunday, Salemfest, a town event looked

forward to each year, once again took place in various locations throughout Salem. This event featured 26 charitable organizations that hosted booths, offering tasty food and inexpensive or free activities for kids and grown-ups. There was something for everybody, including a pet fundraiser parade, a children’s parade, performing entertainment, lots of crafts, Boy Scout displays, free bike raffles, community preparedness, tours of historic buildings, Civil War historians re- enacting daily life, a giant used DVD-tape-book sale, and much, much more. One highlight of Salemfest is the “Chowder Walk,” which takes place at Greystone Farm at Salem Senior Living Community. The proceeds from the Chowder Walk benefit the Alzheimer’s Association 2010 Memory Walk. The guests were able to taste a variety of chowders and soups, along with homemade desserts from the Applelicious Bake Sale.
