ou’ve already done wine country, theme parks and boat tours for your one- or two-day sojourns

close to home, but may not have tried a lazy drive beyond Skaneateles and Auburn on Routes 5 and 20. There is a clever little matchbook-size, accordion-folded map available to enlighten you to the host of offbeat treasures to be found as you proceed west from Syracuse.

This colorful and easy-to-read visual guide

is dubbed “The Locals Always Know the BEST Places to Go!” It was compiled by counties bordering the combined routes, sur- veying residents who suggested favorite stops within the given areas. It’s a well-organized map, including photos, addresses and phone numbers for ease of planning. Check www. routes5and20.com to request one of these free and handy reference maps. Route 20 is an east-west U.S. highway. As

the “0” in its route number implies, it runs coast-to-coast. Spanning 3,365 miles, it is the longest road in the United States, and the route that parallels Interstate 90, the Thruway through New York. As of 2007, the highway’s eastern terminus is Boston, and its western terminus is Newport, Ore., within a mile of the Pacific Ocean. Route 5, on the other hand, is a state route

that runs from Buffalo to Albany. The two routes converge for 68 miles between Avon and Auburn. Before we head west of Syracuse, the

season dictates that we take a brief diversion to apple country—the one along Route 20,

A road runs through it: Route 20 in Skaneateles leads you to the venerable Krebs restaurant and westward to Auburn.

not Route 104 skirting Lake Ontario. Visiting these orchards also offers a delightful ride through the hills of LaFayette. One of the best attended festivals in the

area is the annual LaFayette Apple Festival, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An apple pancake breakfast starts both days at 7 a.m. Check out the pie contest, scarecrow contest and the best apple fritters you’ll ever eat. Take Interstate 81 south to Exit 15, turn left onto Route 20 and drive 2½ miles to the grounds. Advance-sale tickets cost $3 and are

available at McDonald’s, 5961 Route 20, LaFayette; Deer Run Farms, 2695 Route 11A, LaFayette; Bailey’s Dairy Treat, 7100 S. Salina St., Nedrow; and Cazenovia Equip- ment, 2393 Route 11, LaFayette. At the gate, tickets cost $4. Children younger than 12 are free. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.lafayetteapplefest.org. Apple picking is a local tradition, and a

variety of orchards awaits you along Route 20. Perhaps best known is Beak & Skiff Apple Farms, 4472 Cherry Valley Turnpike (Route 80), LaFayette, just a jog away from the main thoroughfare. Pick your own apples every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; to find out which varieties are available when you want to go, check out www.beakandskiff.com. Have a fun time hitching a ride on their wagon and then pick away. If you would rather buy than pick

these taste treats, the farm store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., where you may browse the shelves for country gifts, jams, jellies and cheese, cider, honey and apples. But there’s more to do here than hit the

orchards. Pony rides, face painting, a bouncy house and a visit to the friendly goats are highlights as well. Don’t forget the Beak & Skiff Distillery and Winery, located only a few miles from the farm store along Route 20 to pick up a bit of apple bubbly. The spot is open
