22 PEOPLE NEWS COACHING Cowen’s Midas touch Top trio at The Open confirms Pete Cowen’s position at the very peak of coaching.
Not content with coaching the US Open Champion (Graeme McDowell) PGA Master Professional Pete Cowen then unleashed his men to claim the top three places at the Open Championship – Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood, and Henrik Stenson. Yet interviewed on BBC 5
Live shortly after the event Pete was very modest about the tremendous achievement, crediting the immense talent and work rate of his players. It’s a healthy attitude as we all know that whatever the factors, the difference between winning and losing in this game is paper- thin. Other Cowen players like
Darren Clarke, Tomas Bjorn and Sergio Garcia have all been tantalizingly close to the holy grail of the claret jug. Pete Cowen’s golf coaching philosophy is called ‘Te
Pyramid of Learning’. It starts by building ‘solid foundations’ (aim, stance, posture, grip, and body position) and then provides a progressive journey through the entire golf swing covering ‘dynamic movement’ (balance, body action, arm swing, hand action, path and plane) through to ‘controlling power’ (hand/eye coordination, speed and pressure, angle of attack) and ‘attitude’. Tis coaching philosophy has worked for European Tour winners, Ryder Cup stars and now half of all major champions it seems! Time to get reading his coaching books. •
