William T. Taylor President & CEO,

Community Bank of the South

William “Bill” Taylor, 51, serves as president and chief executive officer of Community Bank of the South, which was founded in 1999 and has offices in Merritt Island, Cocoa and Rockledge. As a resident of Brevard for over 40 years, Taylor graduated from Rockledge High School and attended Brevard Community College before earning a degree in banking from Louisiana State University. Now a resident of Merritt Island, he enjoys photographing wildlife in the river from the balcony at his home.

What led you to enter your profession? When I was a young man, I worked at Publix Supermarkets unloading trucks. I decided I did not want to get up at 3:00 a.m. each morning, so I pursued my career in banking.

Who was your mentor and what did he/she teach you? Fred Gay, who instilled in me to be fair with everyone in all business dealings and to give back to the community.

Favorite quote “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will,” by Vincent Lombardi.

What would most people be surprised to know about you? At the age of 14, FLORIDA TODAY ran a contest on who could sell the most newspaper subscriptions, and the grand prize was a car. So knowing that would be my only means of transportation when it came time for me to drive, and with determination, I set out each morning and late evenings knocking door-to-door selling my subscriptions. When all was said and done, I had the top sales, and was awarded the grand prize of a 1973 Chevrolet Vega.
