| BIZ STYLE What is Business Casual?
Dressing well in a casual business setting shouldn’t add stress to your work routine. An idea that was developed to make life easier, yet somewhere along the way, the lines have blurred and it’s left many a worker bewildered by the options and choices. We decoded the business casual puzzle to take the stress out of what to wear. The focus should stay on ‘business’- it should be a more relaxed version of your usual business attire.
BASIC GUIDELINES: w Everything should be clean, well pressed and not showing wear
w Ties are usually not necessary
w All shirts, particularly Polo shirts, should be tucked in
w Keep accessories conservative
w Don’t forget dark socks, nothing spoils a look like white athletic socks peeking out from pants
w Jeans- Check your company’s policy. If jeans are permitted always go with a darker wash in a tailored fit. Beware the “Dad” jeans!
SOME DEFINITE DON’TS: w No t-shirts, unless a graphic shirt under a blazer or jacket
w No sneakers, athletic shoes, or sandals w No ripped jeans w No hats w No shorts
FOR THE LADIES: w Nothing should be tight
w Pants and skirt colors should generally be solids: navy, gray, khaki, brown and black are always safe
w Hose are not necessary
w Keep jewelry, cosmetics and accessories conservative
w Mini-skirts, skorts, sun dresses, beach dresses, and spaghetti-strap dresses are inappropriate
A rule of thumb - if you question whether an outfit or article is appropriate- it’s not, don’t wear it.
