having a memorial service for her mother who passed away. Is it appropriate to still send flowers? What do people do in a case like this? A: You ask a very good question. Traditionally, it was very common to send flowers for the funeral of a family member or friend who had died. Flowers have long been a part of the funeral process. They serve to not only decorate around the casket, giving a pleasant fragrance to the funeral area, but they also served the purpose of decorating the grave until the grass had a chance to reestablish itself at the cemetery. Today, with the increase in families choosing to hold memorial services or “celebrations of life,” the flower dynamic can be quite different. The primary reason that a person would send flowers in the first place is that they are using this gesture to support the family, as well as to honor and acknowledge the person who has passed. Flowers can still be a very significant way to do this, even when we are talking about an alternative form of funeral service. The concern at this time now becomes “what do we do with the flowers after the memorial service ends?” Since there is no cemetery, per se, to decorate, where do the flowers go? This is where it is important to consider using flowers that have more than one possible use. By possible use, I mean that after the services have ended, do we have an additional
use for the flowers that have been ordered? Traditional funeral flowers are designed to go to a cemetery and decorate a grave. Since chances are there is no cemetery involved in a memorial service, traditional flowers would probably not be suitable. In a case such as this, a possible alternative would be something like a vase, dish garden, or smaller arrangement that a family member could take home and enjoy for a longer period of time. Another suitable possibility could be a plant,
tree, or bush that could be transplanted and enjoyed for years to come. Silk arrangements are also a viable possibility. If a family is using a church or public facility for the service, you may want to contact the funeral care advisor to see if flowers could be sent that could be used not only for the service, but also by the church for future services in honor of the person who has passed. In fact, some friends have made it a point to donate the flowers that decorate the church alter in memory of the person who has died. It is important to know what type of services
are being planned to make sure that you are sending appropriate flowers for that particular service. Once you know the particular form of services that are being held, your local florist or funeral care professional should be able to advise you as to what options are available that would be appropriate for that particular form of service.
