School: Maria Bessette, Haley Enos, Madison Enos, Julia Enos, Kate Farrell, Alexa Tsao, and Kara Yennaco. Together, we have begun a year- long project dedicated to the on-going issue of homelessness in America. We call ourselves A Walk In Their Shoes. We are a non-profit organization and for the next 12 months, we will be working with New Horizons for New Hampshire located in Manchester. This facility serves as a homeless shelter, a food pantry, and a soup kitchen to those living without a home or impoverished families and individuals. We will be volunteering at the shelter, holding fundraisers, and culminating with a documentary to present to the community. Over the summer, we have already begun to create a solid foundation for the following year by touring the New Horizons facility, volunteering at a New
Horizons road race, meeting with influential members of the community, and discussing our goals for the following year. The school has given us full use of its video production equipment to create our documentary during the upcoming school year and summer 2011. Because of all the work we will be putting into creating this documentary, we are piloting the Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) program for our school district. This will allow us to receive academic credit for the work we do outside of school. Recently, with the help of the technology at Windham High School, we were able to accomplish our first task: redesigning a PowerPoint presentation used by New Horizons on a daily basis. Currently, we are meeting with students from Salem High School and Pelham High School to try and generate a joint fundraiser in addition to setting up a meeting with a member of the New Horizons alumni. We are all very excited for the prospect of the upcoming year. If you would like to help us by making a contribution to A Walk In Their Shoes, please refer to our home page for details:

National Lifeline Awareness Week
submitted by NH Office of Consumer Advocate During the nationally organized “Lifeline
Awareness Week,” September 12-18, the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission (Commission) and the New Hampshire Office of Consumer Advocate (OCA) are promoting the telephone programs, Lifeline and Link-Up Assistance, which offer discounts to low-income residents in order to ensure access to basic local telephone service. This discounted phone service makes it easier for New Hampshire customers to have access to local emergency services and community resources. Lifeline and Link-Up are two separate programs that can help income-qualified customers get new phone service and pay their telephone bills. These are federal programs implemented by local telephone companies that provide discounts to eligible households on installation costs for new phone service, as well as for basic monthly service. The Commission and the OCA want all New Hampshire residents to stay connected, including those who need phone service, but can’t afford it. You may be qualified if your household income is no more than 135 percent of the federal poverty income guideline, or if you participate in or qualify for any of the following programs: • Medicaid • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
• Electric Assistance Program (EAP) or Natural Gas Bill Assistance
• Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8) • Food Stamps

Harris did not report any injury. Her vehicle sustained heavy damage to the front left corner. Both the motorcycle and the vehicle had to be towed from the scene. There was a helmet found in the vicinity of the crash; however, according to an eyewitness, Lima was not wearing it at the time of the collision. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Lifeline helps qualified customers who already
have telephone service save money on their monthly phone bills, while Link-Up helps eligible customers receive a discount on the installation of telephone service in their homes. Some wireless companies participate in these programs, so customers should check with their wireless carriers.
Consumers can also save money by voluntarily foregoing pre-subscribed long distance telephone service by requesting toll-blocking, a service that prevents toll calls from being made from their phone. Customers using this service can still use pre-paid calling cards or dial-around services to place long-distance calls from their homes. To apply for either Lifeline or Link-Up, contact
your telephone company. More information on the programs is also available on the Commission’s Website:
