Safer, greener disposables for hospitality Bunzl Catering Supplies

launched a new range of CE marked reusable polycarbonate and polystyrene glasses, together with environmentally friendly single use tumblers - including BioWare (PLA) and rPET (recycled PET), as a safer, greener option for the hospitality industry. Polycarbonate reusable


glasses outperform standard glasses both in toughness and cost effectiveness and preserve the drinking experience as they have a very similar appearance and weight to traditional glasses, with no impact on the taste of the drink. News in brief


PET collection soars According to Petcore, the collection rate for PET across Europe reached nearly 50 per cent in 2009, that’s an increase of more than eight per cent on 2008. In 23 countries, the tonnage of PET recycled now exceeds the total plastics recycling target for all polymers as laid out by the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.


Zero waste economy target


The Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Caroline Spelman, has announced a review of waste policy in England with the aim of moving towards a ‘zero waste economy’. She ruled out banning landfill altogether but made clear that reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill is a clear priority.


WRAP loan fund


WRAP has announced a £2m loan fund available to companies setting up processing for mixed plastics. The loan will only be repayable when the company starts making a profit. WRAP’s business plan


includes achieving 40,000 tonnes per year of mixed plastics recycling in the UK by 2011.
